loose hanging front spring is that correct?

jacked my car up today and noticed that when jacked up the spring just hangs there totally loose it doesn't seem right?

Shouldn't there be some type of suspension stop?

MOTORHEAD 05-17-2011 04:39 PM

That's normal.

mln385 05-17-2011 04:55 PM

Yep odd and seems wrong but that is how BDR in their infinite wisdom designed them.
Put it on a two post lift and watch how much travel is in the struts as well....

charlandk 05-17-2011 05:33 PM

Becareful to make sure you line it back up when you lower it. I had mine jacked up once and the guy who lifted it did not put it back down correctly. It was an interesting ride down the road until I figured out what had happened.

 It may be normal for a BD but that sure is a pizz poor design. If you "catch air", be prepared to crash upon landing.

I use nylon ties to strap the spring to the coil over hat, then when you drop it back down everything slips nicely back into place without any problems.:)

This is not an odd design and if you look at a number of performance cars with springs changed to progressive spring rates the height of the relaxed spring is shorter and you get a gap it is not going to leave the car without the strut also leaving. You will see the same thing, including the BMW M3 which the suspension is based on when you add "H&R" type perfomance springs.

If you don't like it, sell it, buy a different car. It might fit you better.

...D111 this is not directed at you.

ALL coil springs should be captive, the spring is WRONG for the shockabsorber travel.

Get the correct springs, or change the shockabsorber to one with less travel.

M3 suspension:confused:

I wish not so lucky in my BDR a older BMW 325 suspension type. does anyone know if the 325 bmw front suspension is jacked up the spring will hang freely the same way if so then I won't bother doing any modification.

then who would it be directed at:LOL:no worries just trying to figure this out.

There are other coilover options look here: BMW E36/E46/E90/E92 Suspension - H&R Springs, KW Coilovers, Eibach, TEIN Coilovers, KONI Shocks, TMS & more but I don't think the rears are drop in without some modification for the upper attachement. And the spring rates will be high for the lighter BDR.
And here are some struts if you want shorter travel (the better fix): Turner Motorsport | BMW Suspension Parts

And buy bumpstops if you are worried about it compressing the other way. Which should be a much bigger worry.

Just as you I am entitled to my opinion, as for other car I have them.
Issue with this set up is just like stated in above post, if jacked up and not properly aligned to perch it could be an issue. May not leave the car because it is held in by strut shaft but my thoughts are is it should have some retaining system to keep the springs from free floating and possible moving out of the perch.

I find it odd, you don't we are both entitled to our own thoughts.;)

Same thing happens to SPF cars. Just keep an eye on it as you lower the car back down. Mine have always slipped back into place.

Cashburn 05-18-2011 07:05 AM

Experience with aftermarket suspensions would have you seeing this is the norm. You can cut the wheel hard both ways while moving and they reseat.

cdnus 05-18-2011 07:38 AM

If you strap the coils to the upper hat they will always stay seated & you will not have to worry about them re-seating.
Most hats have a couple of holes in them that allows you to slip a ny-tie through & around the upper coil.

I agree with GAZ64. Many or most of these suspensions do not have droop or bump stops designed in their cars. After reading the tech arcticles for QA-1 shocks I decided I needed to build in some droop stops. Many guys have to resort to stiffer springs without bump stops, which are sometimes hard to design in. There is a picture in my gallery. I tried to insert it here but new insert photo design does not seem to work.

Use these to prevent your springs from unseating and causing a wreck - Pegasus - Hyperco 2.50 inch Zero-Rate Helper Spring
