Hi! How to quiet those side pipes?
New member! Very excited. First post...
Thinking about taking the plunge. But I was with a friend in their BDR (blue and white) and it was real loud for my tastes.... My ears hurt by the time I got out. I'm down in Texas so I'm not really worried about bothering the neighbors - houses are pretty far apart and most of the pick-up trucks sound louder (no exhaust at all). hehe.
Is there a way to keep the side pipes (love the way they look) but dramatically cut down that exhaust noise without killing horsepower?
I want an older style engine. Thinking a 351 to keep my costs down. Carbs.
I know it's probably curse words on this forum. But I was curious.

If you are buying a Cobra and your ears hurt by the sound of the engine, you need to buy a corvette and stay away from Cobras. That is the fuel of our passion for our beloved cars. It comes with the territory bud.

It's not. The bottom line is that it's pretty hard to easily quiet down existing loud sidepipes. Instead, you have to have the sidepipes built to have extra sound deadening in them to begin with. I did that with my pipes from Stainless Specialties and the sound is not objectionable. I don't need earplugs, nor do they give me headaches (like a lot of Cobra sidepipes do). |

I inserted cone shaped perforated baffles into the outlet end of my sidepipes. They go in and are held in position by the screws that mount the pipes to the hanger. Quieten it enough to hear someone talk in the car and are easily removed.

The auger type inserts work well in mine, you can have a conversation at normal driving speeds but they still sound great at wot.

The quieter the pipes the more likely you will loose HP. There are pipes around that sound great and you don't suffer too much on HP loss. It is a balance between loudness and HP for sure, but not many Cobras I know of are under-powered.

Are you talking about me:D If so, I intentionally made mine louder. The OEM sidepipes on the Backdrafts (at least the 600 era) were very restrictive (also not that loud). I replaced them with the Classic Chambered exhaust, picked up HP and made it louder (I Likey alot). Try earplugs, I wear them all the time now. Not so much for the exhaust note but for the wind noise.

Wear earplugs. I do.
That way the Cobra sounds as it should, and I save my hearing.

There's merit to that statement, too. Some years back there was someone around my area that had a small block SPF, that in all respects was a very nice car to look at. However, it was as quiet as quiet could be. I can still remember thinking how "out of place" that was, being that quiet. |

Which classic chambered pipes did you get? The 2.5 or 3 OD? Packed or unpacked? I thought I read from a couple members that if you had the packed version, and you oriented the "scoops" against the flow of the exhaust it didn't make the exhaust too loud at all... If not, back to square one for finding some muffler sections :( |

Ike and Mpanton - do you have a web site to get those inserts? I wanna check them out.
Thanks everyone. I Already got earplugs. I use them when i go to track days with my buddies. But i don't really like wearing them. It doesnt feel natural. Ok for the track, but I wouldn't like using them on the open road.

I did a lot of testing over the years and it is not possible.They are either loud and free flowing or restrictive and silent. Sidepipes are basically header extensions for setting the correct collector length for pressure wave tuning on race engines. You can not build an effective muffler inside a 4" dia. tube that brings noise down to a grocery getter level without causing massive backpressure, as that's not what sidepipes were meant for to begin with. If someone can prove me wrong send me a PM, I'll write you a check for a set of your mufflers ;)
