Cobra Valley sells a product for coating the metal parts of the wheel and threads for installing the wheels. I purchased the product and used it when I installed the wheels. Can't tell you how it will work until I remove them again.

The first time I took mine off took some persuading with the lead hammer. Magilla Gorilla must have put them on. I used anti sieze on both the hubs and the flat surface where the spinner and wheel meet. Never had any isses removing them again. Be careful - a little AS goes a long way and it's nasty stuff to try to get off if it oozes out.

I also purchased "Spinner Ease" from Cobra Valley almost 4 years ago and it works fantastic. When I take a wheel off all of the surfaces still have a coating on it. It sticks like crazy!!

I was told by Cobra Valley not to use anti seize on the wheel threads or any place the wheel comes in contact with the hub. They sell some thread lube and advertise its the best stuff. I bought a bottle from them and used it when replacing the wheels. Will know more when I have to remove them again.

The Spinner Eaze product was made to solve a problem. Using standard pasty silver and copper anti-seize, aside from it's anti-corrosion additives, is intended to "fill in the gap" on the unloaded side of fastener threads to prevent moisture from entering... kind of like what penetrating oil is supposed to do by wicking into the threads.
However, this same abrasive nature of the common pasty anti-seizes on the high pressure tapered conical surface of the spinner can make the spinner much more difficult to remove when needed to. Sometimes almost as difficult than if it were corroded in the first place. The Spinner Eaze clear liquid anti-seize only protect the metallic surfaces from corroding and galling under high pressure. A drop or two is all that's needed and any excess is wiped off. It's like staining wood... once the stain is on, anymore isn't going to increase the coverage. However, you also do not want a slippery "lubricant" on the spinner which can actually promote the spinner to come off before it's needed to. The Spinner Eaze is *not* a lubricant in the sense it would lubricate repetitive moving parts to prevent wear. Its is a corrosion inhibitor and anti-galling product only. It's been out there for 15 years now with excellent results. Best thing is only a drop or two will do it, and no after mess. One important added note... you can even use this on header bolts with anti-seize protection results, which means it will stand up to some of the high braking temperatures you might see on track days in the 300-400+ degree range. http://performanceunlimited.com/cobr...innereaze.html |

The modification to the tool is coming along great. Almost finished and will post some pictures when I finish. I tried the mod on the wheels and the tool fits the 18" wheels now. Sure will be a pleasure to remove the wheels now. We have the mods programed into the CNC machine. Will be easier to do the second set. Another picture of the mods.

I'm going to pick up some of the Spinner Eaze since it probably is better for the application. I just wanted to comment about anti seize being messy and hard to clean up and get off your hands. Odorless mineral spirits melts right through it and cleans it off tools, parts and your hands with ease.

Will this tool work with the 289 15" FIA wheels...I have the ones from P.S. Engineering, but the FIA wheels should all be the same design.

Have used white lithium grease on both cobra's for 20 plus years, not as messy, don't seem to build up like anti seize when your taking wheels off. excess is easy to wipe off when you put wheels on. I have aluminum spinners, stainless spinners, halibrand mag wheels, trigo aluminum wheels, bennett aluminum wheels and no matter which combo I put on car I have had no problems.

Wheel Removal
Before you purchase a $180 tool, you might want to try this knock off bar from Cobra Performance who only works on CRX. Here is link:

Then you get your dead blow or mallet and knock the crap out of it. Have I used it? No but did order one but it took a few weeks for delivery. My issue was something else as it turned out. Have 17 inch wheels on Backdraft that I purchased and the first thing wanting to do was replacing the original tires. One of the spinners was fused to the wheel and wheel ultimately had to be cut off. Nightmare that some people have experienced. If you are 18 inch, guess your car is newer. Make sure you use anti seize once you get the wheel off or they can be real trouble. Owner of this shop said he pulls his wheels off annually on his cars as maintenance to clean pin drives and uses old fashion grease. Cobra Valley has some anti-seize that is really good in a can. The paste stuff can harden up over time, becomes gritty, and can create a probelm. There are wonder reviews on the mentioned tool. Reason I did not purchase, knew I had a problem, and if I broke off two ears already, the tool would have broke too. The Knock Off bar looks like a nice way to do it and one can get some great wacks with two people. Good luck and hope it goes smoother getting a wheel off than I had. |
I have used it on the 17" wheels and it worked fine.
