Default Fuel gauge suddenly dead - fuel sender part number ??

So, as part of the "weld punch holes in tank" project (I had the tank out), the fuel gauge now rests on E with the key on.

I located exposed copper on the black (ground ?) wire and taped that up.

I found this in a olde thread:

The gauge needs a ground and the sender needs a ground.

Verify that the "ground" wire wire on the sender is really grounded.
Verify that the gauge is grounded and has power when the key is on.
If yes, momentarily ground the sender connector on the gauge. That should "peg" the gauge at full. If it doesn't, the gauge is bad.
If the gauge checks out, it's either the sender or the wiring to the sender.

Question - can I jump the two wires at the sender to test the gauge ?

It worked just a few days ago.
