Brake Booster
Brake booster blown. Backdraft is no help. Seems as it is a 8" single diaphragm booster manufactured by ATE in Germany. No help from them either as they do not produce this part any longer. Looking to find a good used one. IM me if you know of one for sale.

This thread does identify some PNs and a replacement.
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/back...e-booster.html Some folks are using the Renault booster when doing engine swaps on E30 and E36 BMW. This Renault has a 7.0" dia. More Information for A-1 CARDONE 535260 Car-Done PN 535260 |
Brake Booster
Thanks for the info. Will now work on a Backdraft car. Bolt spacing is wrong. Rod size is different and the canister size is much wider than the one on the car. Talked with a guy at Cardone and he said to take it to NAPA and they could send it in for rebuilding by Cardone. I have sent it to a company in California who says he car rebuild it. Will know more about that tomorrow.

Good to hear your making progress. I'm sure I and others will be in your situation and your solution will help.
Just waiting to come across the 1978 International Harvester truck part that's used somewhere by BDR. Frankly it wouldn't surprise me. I'm starting to feel like I own an Alfa again....lol. |
Brake Booster
Sometime ago I read a post by Mark Byer who had the same problem. I have tried to contact him to no luck. He said he got a booster from Backdraft. Called them, total wast of time. I would like the part # from ATE of the one he got.
|
I sent mine to a company who said he can repair it. He will get the part tomorrow. The company name is Karps Power Brake. Will post more when I hear from him.
|
The part number he rec'd is in the thread I had linked above.
In that same thread TomCobra17 listed his PN and it matches what I have installed 47210-B1002A The 07.7742-1441.4 he also lists is not even close to what mine has meaning thats not a part number. |
Hi Jim, I saw your post but was locked out of posting because of password problems. I did adventually get one from BDR but it took a while. I had to cut the length of the shaft down and had to open up the clevis hole in the brake arm. Everything else bolted right up. The link provided above by spdbrake has the info. The last post in that thread has what the part number is of the original booster. If the place in California can rebuild yours that would be a good option. If they can, I will send in my original one for rebuild so there is a spare for someone out there in the future.

Just had a smiliar problem. They were able to use the #'s stamped on the shaft of the booster where it connects to the brake pedal to cross reference. Sounds like you already have this taken care of but may help someone else in the future.

The problem was finally solved. The shop in California can repair the ATE boosters. It is on the way back home. Sure happy not to have to change so many things. Talked with Mark and he is going to send his broken one to this shop for repair and keep as a spare since Backdraft in Boyton Beach has no clue what to do if you have the same problem nor seems as not to care either. The company is: Karps Power Brake and their number is 909-985-0800 and will not cost a fortune to get it repaired.

Just received the booster today. Looks like new and half the price of a new one if you could buy it.

Brake Booster
Just to add to the information regarding the ATE booster. Upon sending the part to Karps for repair it was found that there was no check valve in the booster. It world be a great idea to check this. Talking with Karps they could not believe the fitting had no check valve in it.

Edit: I just discovered references that indicate there should be check valves in both the vacuum reservoir (if equipped) and the booster. According to Jeff at Karps the vacuum necessary should be in the 15 to 18 inch range. The purpose for the check valve is to have brakes once the engine is shut down. The system on the Backdraft cars has the booster line connected to the intake and no check valve installed. I am considering installing an electric vacuum pump should the new intake I have installed does not give me proper vacuum.

We've been installing check valves since day one here. Mentioned it to the factory reps and {insert intentional silence}
