Backdraft gas tank (PLASTIC)
My Backdraft (#1214) has a plastic gas tank. It also has a leak ! This type of gas tank (plastic) was a surprise to me. I noticed Iconic parts sell aluminum tanks. I wonder if Backdraft now uses aluminum in the newer cars? Has any one had any problem with this type of gas tank ?

Backdrafts come with poly tanks... Aluminum is an option, which is pretty much required if you are going to do fuel injection. |

i would give 3M DP-420 a try. Also Double Bubble D-50 Flexible Urethane is an option. WE have used the the last product to repair leaks in soft bladder fuel cells with great success. Just make sure the surface is really clean.
Hoerr Racing in Illinois sells the Double Bubble product.

This tank did not have a leak. The screws on the gas level sending unit were loose. Thanks for the feedback. |

The 2 dealers I spoke with recommended going with an aluminum tank if I was going to order a new car. Now I know why. I drained and dropped my plastic tank to change the sending unit. What a piece of junk. Going to change to aluminum while I have it out. Iconic has one that is a direct replacement.

Plastic tank?
Learn something every day ... had no idea that BDR used plastic tanks ... nothing wrong with them, I used one on my street rod and had no issues and no rust. My BDR is a 2004, #151 build and came with the aluminum tank.

Wow Backdraft must have converted to using some really cheap materials in making their cars now. Mine was car 69 and we had polished stainless steel gas tanks as standard equipment, no other options available or offered.

I had heard that earlier tanks were stainless. That's nice. I wonder how heavy they were. I have nothing against plastic but this thing is garbage. Tissue paper thin. I was worried about bumping it taking it out. Going to order in aluminum one tomorrow.

Had a 612 horse 427 Keith Craft all aluminum motor, really never worried about weight. LOL I had pulled it out once for some rear end work, supprisingly light. |

I have a 2018, # 1642. It has a welded and baffled aluminum tank. It is a special order item. |

Everything is a learning process with these cars. It seems at one time they had a stainless tank, a plastic tank and now aluminum. I take it yours looks like this. It's the one I ordered.

Gents, the plastic tank is standard on BDRs. If you have something other than plastic then you/dealer ordered differently. Aluminium is needed for FI cars. Jeff

Why is an aluminum tank supposed to be needed for a fuel injected car???
What is the significance in regard the material whats holding fluid in one place and to be delivered by a internal pump to the injectors???
I don't get it...

I also don't understand the fuss.. Plastic tanks are in every major OEM car at the moment. I'm running EFI on my Backdraft, and its on a plastic fuel tank.
The idea that stainless or aluminium is better, is just a matter of our historic and intuitive preference to 'stronger' materials. However there are also significant drawbacks to stainless and aluminium. Both materials are much more likely to crack on the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) after welding, where the material is left brittle from the welding process.
So: in a collision, i'd prefer my plastic tank over either SS or Ali any time.
EFI does work just fine from the plastic tank too.
It might not look very hot-rod and 'cool' to most.. but that's a different topic for a different day.

Tank Installation
What was required to install the new aluminum tank? My plastic one started leaking at a radius curve, The new tank seems to mount differently from the stock plastic one according to Backdraft. Any drilling required? I do not have access to a lift. Thx
