Steering Wheel Quick Release
I really like a quick release. Handy for a lot of things: Cleaning, under dash work, security. Just a nice add on, IMO. But, I kept reading that it was difficult to do, and required custom machine work.
The piece on the left bolts on to the hub, where the steering wheel bolts on. The bolts come with it. https://i.imgur.com/vlyUe55.jpg The piece on the right, bolts to the back of the steering wheel. Use the same bolts that were used on the steering wheel. Lock nuts and washers are provided. https://i.imgur.com/LSyL6po.jpg The BDR steering wheel uses a Sparko bolt pattern. The quick release is keyed, so it only goes together one way. Pay attention to that as you're bolting stuff together. And, you're done! Sort of. It is now perfectly functional. A fender emblem fit almost perfectly. https://i.imgur.com/3TlNLdb.jpg I'll find some kind of trim piece to fill the area between the hub and the release handle. I may end up powdercoating the polished hub black so it all matches. Or powdercoat the Sparko parts in near-chrome. I'll have to think on that a bit. I want to get a new steering wheel anyway. I'm not a big fan of the wood wheel. |

The NRG bolts on just like the Sparco directly to the chrome hub you have.

I had the hub machined down (looks nicer and keeps the wheel in the original position) and had to have the steering wheels redrilled to the NRG pattern. Here's a link to the thread with my pics (10th post):

Thank for the pics Quentin. I see your point machining the OD of your hub to allow the locking collar to rotate. The NRG adapter has a standard 70mm PCD bolt spacing on the hub side and a 70mm + a 74mm PCD pattern on the steering wheel side. What make / pattern were your wheels?

Thanks Quentin, I measured mine yesterday and found I have the Orig Cobra Mota-lita pattern of 62MM from the 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock position.
Funny I can now see the top two screw holes are further apart than the bottom two. Making the pattern asymmetric. Mine may have been 62mm also, I don't recall.
The good news is that if you drill the NRG pattern off-set to 12 o'clock, you can always go back to the original pattern if needed. |
I finally got around to changing the steering wheel. Do I like the way it looks? Maybe. The wood certainly looks better. BUT, this is so much more comfortable to drive with. I went for a 4 hours drive yesterday. So much better feeling.
The new wheel is very slightly smaller. You would think that would make it harder to steer. But it's such a small amount I didn't really notice it. Bob, the pictures show very little room between the ridge of your dash and the wheel. Optical illusion or do you need really thin fingers?
