Default Stock BDR exhaust from 2012

Question for the experts on side pipes. I know there are different schools of thought on exhaust modifications and the benefits. I stuck my phone down the pipes to see what was actually in there. I always assumed it was fairly wide open. To my surprise, it seems to have a baffling or “something” to that effect running down the pipe, wondering if this is considered restrictive on sound and power? My question(s) is: has anyone removed this, does it actually run the length of the entire pipe? If you have removed it, did it dramatically increase the sound (loudness) logic tells me it would but I’m not sure? I’d be OK with louder:-) assuming it doesn’t change the tone of the exhaust note. I’m considering having a shop cut the end off and see if this could be removed and then have the end welded back on where it exists.... just don’t know if this is a wasted exercise for any actual changes.

Yes thats a normal BDR side pipe muffler. Two 7/8" glass pack tubes. I switched to Flowmaster Slimline mufflers a few years ago and unfortunately they don't make them any more. There are threads on this site detailing that.

If you want to stay all stainless.
Your best bet is a set of stainless side pipes from Gas-n (advertises on this site) https://www.gas-n.com/
Or a set of Porter Standard length 26" x 3" or 3.5" in 304 stainless. Front/rear caps are a bit off for shape but that also depends on which vintage Cobra photos you compare it to.

I would have thought that this post would have garnered much more attention. I seem to recall a thread on this topic that 'lived' for several months with lots of feedback, mostly about issues/problems with the packing materials used in the BDR exhausts. I believe it was on the earlier versions (circa late 2000s, early 2010s?).

Interesting... I wonder if the glass packs could be removed if I cut the curved end off then tried to pull them out, and then have it welded back. Does anyone know if the glass packs are somehow welded in the body of the muffler? Hoping they would pull right out and are more of a “pressure fit”. Would back pressure be a problem/issue if they were removed? Currently have a 427 stroker with 535hp. Exhaust back pressures are not my area of expertise :-)

I'm pretty sure they're welded. But once you go that deep you're committed at that point to tear something up. If you are successful and are able to jerk the guts from the muffler cases, the tone the empty cases will make your neighbors, dogs, cats, small children hate you, and most likely Mr. Popo too.

Update: after a new set of stock pipes I got from Jay at VMS I decided that I hate the way they sounded…just too quiet and it had a weird slurping sound when letting off the gas. I went ahead and cut my originals, gutted the baffles and packing, had them tig welded back together and re-polished myself (whole separate topic). It sounds like a race car from heaven and I absolutely love it!! The cops will likely arrest me but I’m willing to risk it as it’s only out for short weekend drives :-)

Now my main question. Since it’s essentially “straight piped “ do I need to have it tuned again? I haven’t noticed anything in terms of performance drop but it’s also just so hard to tell with 550hp and a lot of power normally. Logic tells me I should have it tuned again? but I’m curious what others folks think or perhaps had experience re-tuning after an exhaust modification.

Ps… did I mention it sounds glorious and I’m a firm believer everyone should have a straight pipe cobra

I have been thinking of doing the same. Is it insane loud or just a little more loud under normal driving conditions. As far as tuning I would check my plugs you don"t have to pull all just one from each side and that will let you know if you are to lean.I am only speaking of getting you in the ballpark .

It’s insane loud! I’m on a bit of a high as it’s only a day old with the new pipes so I love it… but I’m a bit concerned it’s just way to loud. I’ve tried to capture on video but the microphone tries to compensate the audio so you can’t really get a good sense of how loud it really is. I started it in my garage for the first time and it actually made me crouch in my seat for a split second haha. If your willing to have your entire street utterly despise you, I’d say go for it. Under load when driving it sounds like a jet engine… it’s ridiculous. I’m sure this post sounds like I’m being dramatic, but it really is ridiculously loud. I secretly love it but also concerned it’s to much for the street.
