Fuel Level Sender
It works!
As we all know, the fuel level sender is not that great. It's OK, and it works; in it's own way. But we all know it could be better. A couple of weeks ago, someone posted on the FB group about this new Holley IR sender. Looked like the perfect thing, so I ordered one from Summit Racing. They said it was B/O until the end of May, But I received it in about a week. Installation is pretty straight forward. It only took me about an hour. The stock sending unit has two wires - ground and gauge. The new one also needs power. I pulled that from the electric fuel pump next door. I cut the pigtail off the original sender, and used that for the new one. Made it a simple plug in. The bolt pattern is an exact match, and uses the same thread pitch for the new longer screws. I still need to mess with the calibration a bit, but it works prefectly. Nice a smooth, appears to be pretty accurate. We'll see how it goes on the next road trip. 🙂 At some point, I want to change the gauges to something better. All I will need to do is recalibrate the sender. I'm pretty happy about this. 🙂 https://i.imgur.com/GSg2XCK.jpg https://i.imgur.com/dqV4Luh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/mchq0VA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/jIcM2Kl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ux1vEhF.jpg |
No fair. I always thought the mental calibration process for the fuel gauge was part of the Cobra fraternity hazing. :)

Just ordered one. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for being the test case, Bob.
I had been looking at that sender for a couple of weeks now, mired in indecision. When you did your gauge calibration, were you calibrating for Nisonger/Smith gauges or some other gauge? Thx, |
Will these sender units be a direct/ easy fit to the plastic fuel tanks?

That sounds promising, the unit in the plastic tanks have a 5 bolt pattern as well

Looks like it should work. I would buy it, and then if it doesn't fit you can return it.

I will be getting one of those for sure, they're only available in the US so I will wait till I have decided on if I get a ali tank and new fuel pump, thanks again
|
Mine will be here this weekend.

Bob, I see you have an access panel in the trunk floor to get to the pump. Mine doesn't. Did that come stock with the car, or did you retrofit it? Maybe the year of the vehicle has something to do with it? Mine is either a 2011 or 2012. Thanks.

The access panel was installed at the factory. My car is a 2016.

Resurrecting an old thread.
I'm hoping Bob will see this post and reply. I have a 2021 bdr rt4 with the bdr autometer type gauges. Once my fuel gauge gets close to around a half tank then for no reason it drops to empty, between full and half it seems to be fairly accurate. So Bob how did this Holley lidar fuel tank sensor work out for you? Was it easy to calibrate etc etc? Thanks in advance as I'm looking at replacing my fuel tank sender! Todd |
Yes, it is still working well. Initial programming was pretty easy, just follow the instructions.
After the initial install, I fiddled with the programming a bit to get it just where I wanted it. Be sure to use thread sealer on the mounting bolts, or you will get a leak. |

These forums are awesome. |
@bobcowan thanks for the write-up. What gauges are you using with this Holley fuel sender? Autometer?
@Toddh03, did you get yours installed? How is it working and what gauges are you using? |
