Fuel guage accuracy issues

I notice even when I get more than 14 gallons in my tank my fuel gauge never shows more than 1/2 and when it gets close to empty it swings irratically. Has anyone ever dropped the fuel tank? Any tricks I should know about. I have the autometer guages. Is it possible to buy just the sending unit? I appreciate any help.
