Default hood strut

I have an early car, #31, that has a single gas strut that holds the hood up. It lost it's holding power so I asked TriState motorsport (where I bought the car) to try and find me another but they're having no luck. Anyone know where I can get another one of these things ? He's shipping it back to me, I'll post a pic when I get it back.

The shock is custom made at the factory. They even were charging it themselves. I would suggest going to the prop rod the cars have employed since #190 or so on... Tri-State should have no trouble getting that for you.

http://www.mcmaster.com/ These folks make all kind of struts. Do a search for struts on their site and see if you can match something. Adding them to my trunk is on my list of to dos.

newbdr
I have #123 which also came with a gas strut. After a few close calls with the wind at car shows I ordered the new BDR prop rod.It took less than an hour to install and now I dont have to worry about the strut not doing its job.

David,

Where did you order your prop rod from? I need to go to the prop rod also. Thanks.

David, I have a lone star cobra but, I'm interested in your type of prop rod also. Can you tell me where to order, the cost, the length and if you would take pictures of it installed showing the bracket mounting, it will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

Prop rod, you will need to fabricate pivot mount.

Ray - McMaster is the easiest way out. They will have your strut and at your doorstep in 2 days. I have struts from them for my hood and trunk. For the hood, I have 30# cylinders on each side. Maybe Katrina could have blown the hood shut but it would have bent a prop rod too. These things are cheap and well made.

Tim,
Lot of effort. The early BDRs had one strut mounted in the center. Sounds like you have duals on your totally different EM. I'm sticking to my prop rod suggestion. Easy retrofit and best overall solution.

Cashburn,

Do you sell the hood prop rod? I have a supercharger intercooler in the way of my center strut and need a new prop rod. I have #58 from Reg. Thanks.

Doug,

I have been wanting to use the struts on my hood and trunk, but haven't figured out how to mount them. You got any pics?

Bruce

I can sell you one but it will cost $28,900 plus shipping Reg might have a cheaper solution.

Jay - If you continue to insist on this prop rod thing, I'm going to burn my "Caution Pipes are Hot"stickers in protest!

Yes I'm rezzing an old thread. After much trail and error I found a suitable replacement for the early BDRs with the gas hood strut. PN: SE115P-20 approx $20 thru Amazon.

I purchased a prop rod assembly directly from Backdraft in Florida years ago for my Backdraft #101. The prop rod installed easily and the mount on the hood was easy to install. Worked well for me. Iconic Parts-Backdraft has the same prop rod assembly for purchase. (www.iconicparts.com). Check them out.

I had considered the BDR prop rod a couple of years ago but they can disengage with wind gusts. Texas is quite windy. I fabbed a locking rod instead.
