BDR Lexan windshield

Does anyone know where to start to look for a Lexan windshield for a BDR? My car is only 1.5 years old and I have my second cracked windshield:mad:

They are definitely stress cracks and both have occurred when my vehicle was just sitting in the garage. Funny, because it never gets below 50 degrees or above 90 inside.

I'm sure there is some company out there that would make a Lean windshield from a mold if I shipped them my original.

Please help!!!!!

Do you have a chrome over brass or an aluminum frame?

Lexon

We Have Sent Reg Some Lexon Screens.:d
He Might Have Some Left.if Not He Can Order From The Factory%/

What is your build number. Mine is 128. Mine cracked in 2 places. When we replaced it we found that the side bars were just pulled into the frame and not shimed. I think that is what caused the cracks. We shimed the frame without pulling in on it and have not had any problems since. I am not sure of the quality of the glass as I have small pits in mine that have developed over time. I am not sure Lexan is legal for street use....

Lexan

What # is your car. Radical Roadsters here in Houston has started stocking, cut, polished Lexan MR-10 replacement windshields for Backdraft cars. I put one in my first Backdraft in late 06 and have taken rocks, birds and barely even a scratch. I just purchased BDR #621 and told James at Radical Roadsters to order one for me. My windshield will crack eventually and when it does, I'm putting another Lexan one in. He recently ordered 4 and has at least one spare for sale. Contact James Yale at http://www.radicalroadsters.com/index.html
Tell him Bill sent you so I can get my usual finders fee (1 Shiner Bock). Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies and the much needed help. It's awesome to see how everyone on the site helps each other.

I have build #416 with an aluminum frame. I'm not sure if shimming would fix my problem, but it's possible.

My first crack started in the upper left corner and the 2nd windshield cracked in the lower right hand corner - go figure

I'll definitely call about the Lexan windshield.

Thanks again everyone!!!!!

build #416 and still having windshield issues????? I hope this is an isolated incident. This problem should have been resolved years ago. I had an early 100 model with the same issue.

I am sure it would be covered under warranty unless its over 1 year old.. so far mine hasn't cracked but then I baby car with no track events..

NorCal Cobra,
RoadRunner Glass in Manteca said that if my glass cracks he could make me one out of Lexan. He said that they make all of the windshields for a lot of the race cars around the valley.

Reg sent me the first replacement windshield for free, but he told me they typically don't do that regardless of the build date (+ or - 1 year). I think it's safe to say they won't send me another. I guess it's worth a try.

I sounds like the Lexan may be my best bet. I just can't afford buying screens every year, especially with a new baby.:o

Thanks for the tip Terry!!!!

I guess I misunderstood their warranty policy.. glad my windshield hasn't cracked..luck of the draw I guess.. insurance would probably cover it if broken by a rock, etc.. after a couple they might get a little harder to deal with.

I have had a Lexan screen for 18 years.. never go back!!

NorCal Cobra 03-18-2008 03:01 PM

I heard you have to be careful on how you clean Lexan. Apparently cleaners with amonia can cause a permanent haze. Is that true??????

BEH 03-19-2008 07:15 AM

Can you still pass safety with Lexon?
I thought it had to be Safety Glass.

Lexan

1) Lexan is not DOT approved. Have you ever had an inspection done where the inspector has checked the DOT stamp on your glass. I haven't.
2) Cleaning. Maguires makes two products for cleaning plastic. #18, spray on wipe off with micro fiber only. MR-10 is "Mar Resistant" both sides. Resistant not scratch proof! The other product is a plastic polish, that will take out fine abrasions and keep your Lexan windshield looking like new.

In South Africa the inspectors wre anal about the dot stickers. We got past that by taking a hammer and a piece of Lexan and asking the inspector to please break it. He could'nt!!

Chanmadd, interesting.

#139's windscreen split nicely into thirds about 6 months after delivery in August, 2004.

Looked like three flat-screens. I have the pics and the documentation.
