Cobra Insurance

To all our BACC Cobra friends….(posted on NorCal also)

We just paid our yearly insurance premium and we thought we might be paying too much for $75,000 theft / damage coverage on our 2007 Superformance. We called numerous other Insurance companies to get a quote. We tried the usual…Hagerty and Progressive as well as a few other big names in specialty cars and they were all about twice to three time what we pay.

We’ll stick with what we have unless someone has better coverage they wish to disclose. I was surprised with the rates from other companies and am now happy to shell out the $711 a year for the amount of coverage we have through “Infinity Classic Collectors”.

This is our coverage………….If the car is totaled from damage or fire there is a flat payout of $75K …Medical $1000…Uninsured medical $3500…Bodily Injury $100k/300K…Collision $250 deductable...Property Damage $100k.

The coverage started around $625 in ’07 when we bought the car and has gone up to $711. This is the reason we started looking for a better rate. If your coverage is high you may want to look into Infinity. If yours is better I would be interested. Send me a message if you need additional info... tom

Anybody ever get a quote from Grundy? Their TV quotes seemed pretty cheap.

I did at Hot august Nights last year...They were $1600 + for the same coverage with a perfect driving record of course. :)

$110K agreed value, standard 100/300 liability policy for $600. Just wrote the check for year 3. Impeccable driving record.

Tom,

I also have an Infinity policy written by Northwest Classic http://gotinsurance.com/ My policy is about the same as what you have.

My rate went up slightly last year, and I realized that Infinity had switched my policy to unlimited mileage (no idea why). They switched it back to 6K miles a year, which works for me and lowered the cost.

Devil's advocate

Don't mean to irritate anyone here, but do you all not drive your cars? How does anyone have agreed value ins. and drive out of their driveway? Given the restrictions I've been given, I'm almost willing to provde agreed value insurance.

I have used Grundy for 5 years now and pay $715 for my 2003 SPF. Agreed value $65k, 100/300 no deductible and no mileage restrictions. Perfect driving record.

Oops, I forgot. Chartis (Barrett Jackson). I had Chartis before the branding occurred. I liked the agency that brokers it so much I moved all of my other insurance business there. The daily drivers, homeowners and umbrella policy are with Auto Owners. Which got a #2 rating in the last Consumer Reports. I'd never heard of them before. They offer a substantial discount if you pay the premium annually, so be sure to ask as it will lower it substantially.

The Chartis insurance is a hobby car, not a daily driver. I get 5000 miles for that rate, and I don't know how I'd ever drive it that much. I did about 3000 miles the first year. Last year with engine and clutch downtime and the generally crappy weather (which tended to happen on weekends) I only got it out for about 2000 miles.

Joy...I have 11,000 actual miles on mine. We are limited to 6000 miles a year.

Twobjshelby's...I'll be calling Chartis....thanks tom.........Hope California doesn't have anything to do with it (impeccable record also)

I’ve been with Condon & Skelly for a couple years now, Agreed value $65k, 500/500 no deductible 3000 mile a year restrictions. Perfect driving record. $ 292.00 a year, Beat that……

wanab5150 02-14-2011 09:42 PM

Have the number for Candon and Skelly? Where?

jeddi 02-15-2011 12:07 AM

I have classic car insurance for $35k for under $150 a year. I was shocked it was so cheap, but from what I understand it's legit.

Joy 02-15-2011 10:56 AM

Still no answer

What about restrictions on where you can drive? No one seems to be mentioning that. What good does 3000 miles give you if you can't drive to anything but a show? I've talked to most of these company's and they all told me I could basically only drive to car shows and then home. If anyone has other coverage with agreed value, I'd love to hear.

I guess I need to find out where I can go without shooting my right foot off. I don't do shows but I do drive anywhere I want to with unlimited mileage. If I was limited to shows I would find a carrier that would let me drive or I would sell it. I pay $440 with $80k agreed value with umbrella through my business. 9k in two years plus it's been in shop for five months for various reasons. 209

Guessing that California will definitely have something to do with it....along with a million other variables that the insurance companies use to crunch numbers.

Royce 02-16-2011 09:40 PM

Tom, just pain Grundy $1058.80 in Aug 2010. Agreed value of $73,000. No mileage restrictions.
