Tom Cruise as Carroll Shelby? It's the 60's Again.

Maybe???

Tom Cruise will make another racing movie, but he's leaving the NASCAR fire suit in his closet.

Cruise is set to play Carroll Shelby in Go Like Hell, a film adaption of A.J. Baime's book "Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans," Variety reports.

The story centers on the legendary contest between Ford and Ferrari at Le Mans. After Enzo Ferrari reportedly backed out of a deal to sell his car company to Ford, Henry Ford II decided to hit Ferrari where he lived, by beating him in one of motorsport's most prestigious arenas.

The result was the Ford GT40, which went on to win Le Mans four times, from 1966 to 1969. Shelby was brought in to manage the effort.

Joseph Kosinski has signed on to direct Go Like Hell. He directed Cruise in the sci-fi thriller Oblivion.

A release date hasn't been set, but Fox has been developing Go Like Hell since 2011, according to Variety (the book was published in 2009).

The Ford-Ferrari rivalry seems like a suitably dramatic choice for a movie, with the clashing personalities of Henry II and Enzo, along with the irascible character of Shelby, providing plenty of potential material.

Plus, who wouldn't want to see a GT40 wailing down the Mulsanne Straight on the big screen?

With this announcement, and the premiere of Ron Howard's Rush, it seems Hollywood is finally figuring out that car movies can be more than just explosions and Vin Diesel.

So will he wear 8 inch lifts or is he getting leg extension surgery? Just think how tall a GT40 will look next to him!

Mr. Cruise is not exactly "box office magic" nowadays...............

Unfortunately, sounds like we'll have to endure 2 hours of Tom Cruise to enjoy the movie.
Why Tom Cruise? I don't see the draw, in fact, I see it turning away more people.

Loved the book and looking forward to the movie. But Tom Cruise really? I think Josh Brolin would be a much better choice.

+100 on this. The casting was very well done in my mind for Rush with respect to the physical attributes of real people vs the actors. With a little movie-magic enhancement, Josh Brolin could look like a dead ringer for CS in the time period this movie is to take place.

In the same way tat Sean Connery will play any part that allows him to have hair, Cruise desperately wants to play tall people (ie, Jack Reacher).

Good pictures; well done.

Tom Cruise is a goof.

I disagree. He never goes anywhere without his box:

In the '80s I saw him in a celebrity race at Bryar Motorsports Park (now NH Motor Speedway) Sure enough, when it came time to take pictures, one of his assistants dragged out the box.

+2 for Brolin, if you saw him in "No Country for Old Men" then you would see he plays the perfect Texan. Lets start a campaign to DUMP CRUSE :3DSMILE:

I'm sure he gets more box then the rest of us.

I dunno, it's not like I'm a big fan, but I think he's a good actor and could do a nice job.

RodKnock 08-27-2014 03:22 PM

Personally, I think either Harold or Kumar (John Cho, Kal Penn) could do a better job of Carroll Shelby than Tom Cruise.

cobra 08-29-2014 08:01 AM

Perhaps Carroll Shelby was also a member of the Scientology ??????????;)

If you have seen Gravity, you will have seen Sandra Bullock curled up in a foetal position on the ISS.... except they werent her legs. I reckon John Cleese could act as legs stand-in, a bit of CGI and we're all sorted for a crackin' film.

PANAVIA 09-03-2014 09:03 PM

John Travolta before Tome Cruise.
