I'll take a shot at this! I could be wrong.I think the stripes were used for racing so that they could tell the team cars apart on the track. The colors were whatever color they felt like putting on them to distinguish them from the other cars.

				 Rookie Stripes?
The only one I've seen was on a new Superformance. I asked and I was told that it was a rookie stripe (Indicating an inexperienced "rookie" driver?) The color of the stripe was yellow. I can not verify this as fact but this is what I was told.

				 ...I agree with Dave
I have heard repeatedly that the fender stripes were used to easily I.D. the members of a team while at speed.
I have heard the fender stripes called rookie stripes, but
FIA "rookie" stripes are, I believe, three stripes on the rear apron/bumper.

				 Registry Info on Fender Stripes
 Mrs. Avi,
According to the Shelby American Registry the fender stripes on the original 289 FIA cars were to help the crews tell the difference between the cars when they were on the track. The FIA's were painted Viking Blue (amost silver colored) with the following fender stripe colors:

 CSX2259 white
 CSX2260 yellow
 CSX2301 maroon
 CSX2323 orange
 CSX2345 white

 Hope that helps.

 Greg

Yellow stripe for 289 FIA Targa Florio?
For my 289 FIA-Viking Blue-I'm thinking of doing the yellow stripe from fender to fender...does anyone know the correct yellow color to use?...and in photos that I've seen from back in the the day, it's looks like the yellow is boardered by thin strpies of white on top and bottom...it know it's minutia...but that's what I want to do...any help of photos that you have would be appreciated! Thanks

				 Team Stripes and Rookie Stripes
Once they adopted the same body color for all the team cars, the cars were difficult to tell apart out on the track. In the days before radio communication between the drivers and crews, team stripes were devised as a way to tell the crews which car was coming into the pits, and helped the crews keep track of timing and scoring.
Shelby wanted the cars to look nice at the start of a race. Accident damage, wear and tear, etc., caused them to look pretty shoddy by the end of a race. The cars were often partially or completely repainted between races. The exact same color of paint was not even used. The painter mixed by eye. Close, but likely not exact. You really can't go wrong on the team stripes. Just like the colors of the cars, the decals placed on them, team stripe widths, exact locations, and stripe colors varied from race to race. The team stripes were bright colors, and stood out in contrast to the body's main color.

Unless you are replicating a particular car from a particular race date, it really doesn't matter. There was no standard.

Rookie stripes are on the rear of a race car to let the faster guys know that they are about to pass a rookie, and to beware.

I copied a diecast I found just because it looked so good. Ct Custom Car did the paint and I can get you the exact color if you want. It's not the Terlingua yellow but very close. Enjoy

Why not go to a place that does race car graphics and wraps and have them do a vinyl graphic for you. Choose from all the colors, pick several sizes / widths and see what works best for you.The best part is when this urge wears off, you can easily remove it and have no lasting 'stain'-like a tattoo leaves.
