Calif registration and exaust noise...
I've started the reg process for my new snake. Spent 45mins at the DMV yesterday and walked away with a 60 day permit. My next stop is the CHP for a vin number--but my question/fear is the noise that these beasts put out. Has anyone been given trouble in the reg process or by the CHP for the noise level in a snake??

Not me. I did take it fairly easy pulling into their parking lot and leaving because I didn't want them to think about the noise issue. Mostly the CHP officer wanted to talk about my car. He was very cool about it.

We have had 5 cars go through up here in Northern Calif. and not a single remark about the noise. However I see you go about it differently than we have to. We first have to go to the Highway Patrol to get a vin # and then to the DMV for the special const. number. Then the smog referee for the test and then back to DMV for plates. How was the DMV experience? Any suggestions?
I am ready to start the registration process. What kind of paper work, and questions should I bring and anticipate? What is the approximate cost for registration? I am still finishing up the body and don't expect to shoot paint until late October, but I want to get on the road legally. Will that be a problem? If you had it to do over again what would you do? Do they want proof of insurance and a safety inspection and if so when?
The Kit Car Manufacture gave the car a VIN# when they issued the MSO. Does CHP still have to assign a VIN#? If I may ask? Who are you buying insurance from? When I talked with my State Farm Insurance agent they started a list of things they would need besides money to even get started. They wanted the car appraised, safety inspection and registration. They backed up a little on the registration when I mentioned that to get the car inspected and register it would have to be driven. |
What year is your snake being titled as?
In doing some internet research it seems like there could be some big advantages to having the car title as a 65 or 66 vs 2002. In fact one source stated the difference was about $600 / year.

ok here is the path ...first stop DMV in calif you can only register under SB100 as a 2002.( i hear that they might be making cars that are currently registerd as a 65 get new titles?) ok back to it the DMV take all your paper work with you MSO and such ....all the sales tax you pay to build your car is used to bring down your registration tax . next step is to go down to the chp office and get a vin. it will not be the vin number your kit builder gave you on your MSO chp gets to pick it ,they put a lil plate on ur frame and are nice and friendly. next with that vin and sequence number you can call up the people at the B.A.R. expect a long wait to get a apt with them. and expect a lil static from them . i dont understand it but they seemed a lil grumpy at me and my lil car :( . last find a certifyed break and headlight inspection station ....hard to find one ..ask the bar for help in finding one . last go to the dmv and give them ur stack of paper again and your done :) tada a new 2002 cobra......no problem with the noise btw from anyone but the BAR guys

This post was supposed to be on the California registration topic. I have asked Ron to move it. It applies to a new Cobra being registered for the 1st time. I am aware of some real problems with cars that are being misrepresented as '65-'66 when they are not. It's a criminal issue, and the DMV is hitting hard. They are looking at Cobras where the vin number is that of a donor car and those that went through tittle washing companies such as Tittles Unlimited. I would not want to be the person who applied for tittle by giving false data. God Bless America, daniel |

California has info on its web site for "Specially Constructed Vehilces". I took a copy into the DMV and it helped me get out of there in 45mins. Check out http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcns.htm and you get the official word. Good luck!! |

Criminal issue my ass.Just because the Ca.DMV gestapo says it is?Any law that creates criminals simply by it's passage is wrong.If my car is a replica of a '65 Cobra,then that's what it should be registered as.
With what is wrong with that dept.and what is going on roadside,the state has time&resources to waste harrassing a few car guys? I did the title process and recieved a valid Ga.registration AND plates.Who the ***K is Ca.DMV to tell me that another states policies are invalid? This is nothing more than the state meddling in your life where they have NO business. Like BnB said-Thank God,i got out of that goose-stepping republic. |
If you do register as a 2002 Cobra car, do you have to pass emmisions? (You know, emmisions, like Evan does when someone calls his car a "waffle iron hot rod"........lol).

With the details of SB100 in hand you are on ther right track we have had a dozen new owner go through the process with out a hiccup this year. Back to your original question the noise has never been an issue except when you want to run it on the track at Laguna Seca:rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: . Hope to see the new car soon. Tony R. |

Once the car has been registered in another state initially, I don't think SB100 applies. I used it and things went smooth as butter.

I have an appointment with local DMV on Tuesday
I went to the site that Mark Roe suggested and got lots of info and also made an appointment for next Tuesday online for the Vacaville DMV. I will report back once I have had my DMV experience. I am getting my paper work organized so I look like I know what I am doing.
I have heard back from some of the out of state guys who are offering their deepest regrets and condolences. Back in Black is so right Peoples Republik of California. They tax you when you make it, they tax you when you spend it, they tax you because you own it, then they tax you for dying. They tax your gas twice and everytime you cross a bridge. What next? Sex?
