Greetings

I have the less than interesting task before me of removing my wheels to change brake pads and as I recall some of the guys have a gizmo to facillitate the fun. Everyone knows that it is my goal in life to improve the vocabulary of my neighbour's children, however this may not be their parents' dream. Also , as it is approximately the same temperature here as it is on the sunny side of Mercury, I don't really want to have a stroke during the procedure....

Please enlighten me, where did you get those tools? I see there is one available from Finish Line (also from Norwegian Line) but it looks less substantial than the one Herr Kennedy loaned me last year.

Can we reopen the debate on why such a tool is needed??? I hate to be obtuse but why are some so wary of using a lead or rawhide hammer?

I know you make a reasonable facsimile of real beer, however a rawhide hammer? Have you ever tried to take the Trigos off your SPF car? I can tell you and the other guys will agree that it is somewhat challenging. I spent an hour pounding the bejesus out of my left rear spinner last time which was not fun.. Not to mention the 11 lead hammers that are stuck in the gyprock ceiling of my garage. Seriously (sure) it is really hard to get those babies off and there is always the potential for destroying the fender of the car as well.
Now, before the "gifted" in the crowd mention it, I use tons of anti-seize when I install the wheels and barely tap the knock offs on.. Driving quickly (never more than 75, ask Larry D. or Gary) causes those things to really weld on there. I have also seen the ears get snapped off due to spirited whacking with the lead balloon on a stick.
The tool is more elegant for the gentleman automobilist to partake in mechanical endeavours, not to mention a lot more even in the torque-a-roo department. It also adds stature within the club when you pooh-pooh the Neandertal efforts of the less than equipped - tool-wise..

So what have we learned?
It is way easier and $afer than the hammer...

I went to your hammer site and I am reminded of one other little trinket:

The wire wheels on the usual Brit car have close to zero offset so you can smack straight down on them, but the Cobra wheels are quite recessed so the angle is really oblique and you don't apply much turning force. This causes those within earshot to learn of bizzare sexual positions and practices during the operation....

Just had to chime in here,

Chime, chime......... :rolleyes: oh well, Steve your right about the angle. I had my rear knock-off's "stuck" last year and all the beating on the them resulted in bent ears because there is no way to get a direct solid whack on those suckers. I went over to Tony's and he had Rick's prototype knock-off tool. Even with that we had to use a long handled sledge hammer to get the spinners off. Tony suggested that to much anit-sieze could be the problem and that it may be promoting the galling that occurs between the wheel and spinner. Anyway, I know that short of cutting off the spinners that tool was the only way they were coming off. Good to hear from you.

SCOBRAC/SPF Sam is not me. I cannot comment on discussions regarding spinner tools as I use a dead blow hammer, however as Monster Mike has pointed out they can be handy. Thank you Steve for providing a good chuckle with what has to be the most eloquent use of the English language on the forum.

I just changed both of my rear tires using a lead hammer. The lead hammer works great. I tried a dead blow hammer and had to hit the spinners a hundred times. Don't forget to alternate hitting the three sides when taking them on and off, and put anti-seize on them. It took about 5 or 6 hits to get mine off.
