Finding and purchasing the CA black and yellow plates is easy, there are always vendors selling them for a couple hundred bucks +/-. However, I'm curious if I/we can legally operate our cars in CA with them installed. Although I do really like my personalized plates too.

As far as I can tell, it's not legal to put vintage (period correct) plates on a SPCNS vehicle. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you walked into to a DMV office and they allowed it. The other variable, is if your title states that the car is a 1965 Cobra, then they may not question it all.

When I get around to doing a personalized plate, I might go for the Black/Yellow repros and take my chances with the Federales.

You've always reminded me of Marlon Brando in "The Wild One."

Can you imagine bringing in some old CA black and yellow plates and trying to get the DMV to assign them to you car?:confused::mad::CRY::(

I'll let you go first Doug. I'm right behind you. You pave the way. :)

Ricardo is the man...he's going to blaze the trail.

Me, I'm staying away from the DMV for as long as possible. :D

Ricardo Singer 04-21-2009 03:50 PM

Again, personalized plates were easy for me. Order online and then 3 months later , you go and pick them up. No fuss.

When my buddy and I got our cars, we couldn't wait for all the paperwork to come back. We found some 1966 dealer plates at a swap meet and used them! LOL
If we got pulled over it would be just like paying a toll.
Besides, I needed to get up to the Vintage Grand Prix...........so off We went. Drove 1200 miles with that tag on the car.

ps. I did keep a legal dealer tag in the trunk

Did i mention that while I was working on getting my cobra CHP'd and BAR'd that someone grabbed my personalized plate name.....

i am bummed. I had that plate on an 84 camaro (in 1984) and my XJS.

oh-fuzzzzz....

Steve,

Congrats!

We all know you're worth more than $1,500. ;)

Time to enjoy that Cobra!

Steve - I didn't think there were any SB100 exemptions left. What number did you receive?

Ricardo - You can obtain rather authentic looking replica license plates in any year and color from a place called www.licenseplates.tv . They will not ship a CA replica plate directly to CA (apparently against the law). You can have them shipped to a friend out of state. Price is rather steep - I think I paid $75 for one plate but it looks great and I only put it on for shows.

Thank you Bob.
this is exactly what I will do.

When is your registration for 2009 due? Just curious, since my tags came up in June of last year and it took them a while to get everything into their system.

PANAVIA 04-29-2009 03:50 AM

October.... :(

That should give them plenty of time to get your paperwork in the system before your renewal notice goes out. Downside is the sticker shock from the new annual reg fee increase.

^^^
No excuse like that in the Santa Clara DMV - they have a wall that has every type of license plate type produced in CA since inception.
