Default I have plates >>!!!

Long Story Short;

I Have generic plates from DMV. !!!

WORDS OF ADVICE ; -- DO NOT GO TO SANTA CLARA DMV if JODY IS OUT. --the manager that was on duty was not trained in SB100,

I just spent 3 hours in a nightmare.

The DMV manager on duty told me such things today as ;

1. to go smog my car again as a 2008 and BAR would transmit to DMV.
2. Go have my VIN re-verified as it is too short
3. wanted to recompute my sales tax as she thought that $4G's was too little
4. wanted me to show her paid receipts for *all* parts on the car.
5. wanted me to charge myself more for my personal labor than $1500 (WTF)

I WAS GONNA SCREAM. --but cooler heads prevailed and i invited her to sit and read SB100 with me and go through the paperwork.

after 2-3 calls to sac, they signed off and gave me plates.

-- ugh...

what a nightmare.

Idiots!! They seriously need a centralized "playbook" that they can use as a reference guide. They must have put those people on a commission!

Last year, I waited and waited until late May (my tags expire in June) for my renewal. Granted, I had just handed all of my paperwork to them in April so everything wasn't in the system. I called the DMV 800 number and they gave me the amount for my reg fees and told me to write my license plate on my check. That worked fine.

Guess what? April 16th and I haven't received my renewal notification for this year. My guess is that I'll have to make another call this year to beg to send to send them my check.

I've got my standard plates on the car now...it makes me think twice about personalized plates.

Yes, I got my pink slip within about 45 days of turning in my final paperwork.

I took my paperwork to the local Colorado. I had everything but they caught me with these unexpected things.

1. The local sheriff that did the VIN verification made some technical booboos. The person reading the form drew circles that moved info in Box C to Box B, but they wouldn't take it like it was. So now I have to have the sheriff transcribe the marked up copy to a new form.

2. They don't have a clue what the MSRP was. They wanted to ding me for a $560K real 65 427. I told them I wish I had one of those and if I did I would gladly pay fees associated with one, but this is a continuation. I was instructed to get the MSRP of the roller from Shelby.

3. I have to get it weighed.

They really do put you through hoops.

Man, it sounds like a memo went out to every DMV office in the Nation to turn replica owners upside down to see if any loose change falls out of their pockets.

Getting my regular and personalized plates was the easiest part of the process for me. I'm guessing that my counter person at Santa Clara must have consulted with Jody, because she went back there once or twice. I would have told them that you will be back another day when Jody was available.

On the day I went to pick up my regular plates, the nice hippee behind the counter where you start the process asked me to get my VIN verified by their in-house (Santa Clara DMV) VIN verifier, which I eventually realized was a totally unnecessary step. That was the only glitch...that day. Two trips to BAR, two trips to the CHP, one chase of an overnight delivery truck with my actual SB100 certificate, etc.

Doug, personalized plates = slam dunk.

Wow Steve, what a nightmare!

I got my personal plates before I even got the SB 100 rolling. The only DMV glitch I had was the assignment of my personalized plate to my daily driver because the counter person did not believe I could "hold" the plates for future use. Therefore, I ended up paying extra fees to transfer the plates more than once.

I have to say I got lucky in that Jody was there the day I went in. The counter person needed a guidance from Jody and with her help whole process took about 10 min. Even had time to sneak in my trailer transfer before the Ca tax increase.

On a second not I just got a letter from Sac that states my car with vin # CHPREFFERAL needs to be smogged. Kinda funny since I no longer own a car with that vin.

Don't try West Covina DMV. They completely short-circuited over the short VIN, and the fact that the License plate was the same as the VIN (said that was impossible, and illegal!!!). Thought I was going to stroke out before I finally got out of there, but all good now.

I received my annual registration renewal from the DMV today without having to bug them.

I think DMV monitors this forum to mess with Doug.

Good evening gents.
since we have a world of experience in this DMV deal, the question is:
how do you exchange regular plates for vintage black plates?

I tried at the San Ysidro branch and i was told that in 1965, the cars did not have plates.
i am not kidding, she said "the computer does not show plates for 1965"

At that point i said "thank you", I turned around and walked out.

Ricardo,

There is a CA DMV change finally effective July 1, 2009 - where if you find a set of black and gold plates that are NOT in the DMV system , you can assign them (for a fee) to your 1969 and earlier car.

"Year of Manufacture Plates, Amend: Vehicle Code §5004.1, (AB 462 Chapter No. 497)
(Operative July 1, 2009)
• Extends the Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plate program to include 1969 year model or older passenger vehicles
• Increases the original YOM application fee (Fee Code 017) to $45.

I do not know how SB100 cars will be treated in this atmosphere. --an interesting question for sure.

The first version of this Bill was vetoed in 2001 by Gray Davis gov of CA, at the time, no wonder why we recalled him.

Steve - I'm pretty certain that you can only apply vintage plates to a vehicle that is of that year (i.e. a 65 Mustang).

Ricardo - I know for sure that the DMV no longer issues black/yellow plates. There are repro plates that you can buy on-line and ship to an out of State address. Not 100% legal to have on your car, but I doubt that police or CHP would ever bother you.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. If your car is registered as 1965 Cobra then they won't blink an eye.
