SPF oil filter locally
Hi group,
It appears to be time for the first oil change for my MKIII. The engine builder supplied and recommended a Ford Racing CM-6731-FL1A oil filter. I can not find one locally anywhere. Summit will sell a case for $180, but I really dont want a case nor do I want to wait for shipping as I really wanted to change oil this weekend. Does anyone have any input or should I just bite the bullet and order it? Thanks. Andrei |
See if you can find a Fram HP-1 locally. That's Fram's racing filter

I think a Wix or K&N equivalent would do fine. There's multiple threads on oil filters, if you want to do a search.

Thanks everyone. I just found a compatable k&n locally. I was starting to pull my hair out after talking to 2 Ford dealers and having them tell me it would take about 2 weeks to order an oil filter. Thats strange as I order BMW and Mercedes parts that are in Germany that get here in a week or less!

If you want the Ford filter call your local Dealer, that's were I buy mine, or use any of the other filters recommended. After break in period put some good synthetic oil, different builders like different brands, stick with what the builder likes. That way you keep them happy.

Ford dealer will definelty sell the fl1hp. the fl1 can be had at walmart for $4.00. the hp stands for high performance. The bypass valve does not open until a 17 psig DIFFERENTAIL across the filter. the regular one is 9psig?. Remeber your oil pressure is just that not differential pressure across the filter. you probably have 55 psig going in and 53psig comming out of the filter. Ford dealer will charge about $15.99.

There have been studies done that show Fram quality is not all that great. Do a search on this site around oil filters and you'll find the thread. I would go with either Motorcraft® FL-1A (standard filter you can get at any auto parts store, but good quality) or their racing filter Motorcraft FL1HP (probably have to order from Summit or buy at a Ford dealership, but you can buy individually). From what your builder recommends, sounds like the FL1HP would be the right one.

The dealer will order it, but it will take 10 days to two weeks and they (two of them) were not very thrilled with the prospect of working I guess today. I ended up order three from my builder in Ohio, realizing I will have to wait till after this weekend to change oil no mater what. My fault for waiting for the last minute, but I assumed I could get a Ford oil filter from Ford and not wait. Oh well, lesson learned.

Motorcraft Fl1A and Fl1HP are standard ford filters. Forget about all those other numbers in front of Fl1A, they're not necessary. If someone doesn't have those on their shelf, you need to find out why. Remember this, when you go to the parts store, you don't have a Superformance, a Cobra, any stroked engine of any displacement. You tell them you have whatever your engine was when it was new and whatever it could have come out of. There are many equivalant filters that you could use as well that are just as good.

The casing is rated for a higher pressure, I think 400 psig as opposed to 200 psig for the fl1a. The key is when the bypass opens. On a true racing engine the oil flowrate is higher therefore the pressure drop across the filter would be higher but they dont want the oil bypassing the filter all the time sooooo they put a stiffer bypass valve in. That being said we feel good putting a fl1hp on but would be perfeclty fine with an fl1a on our "racing" engines.
