Thought I would be ostracized...

This is my first day in ClubCobra, and also my first venture into 'snake-building'...I'm glad to see there are others who share my affinity for the almighty Bowtie Big Block!! Friends have been giving me flak for putting a Chev motor in a Cobra, so to provoke them even more I have named my project 'Cobralet'....that really gets 'em!! I hope to meet other Cobra builders at next years benefit for 'DVSFIII' in Ohio...gotta run for now...got parts to bolt on!!

Pete C 06-25-2002 06:29 PM

Welcome to the club

One could reasonably argue that a Chevy engine is both more economical and reliable. Understand however, that what you have done is a grievous sin against both God and Nature!

Cheers, Pete

xlr8or 06-25-2002 06:34 PM

Pete I agree it may be a sin but he probably saved 10K in motor alone.

Bowtie 06-25-2002 06:47 PM

Money was an issue...considering that I already had most of the 481 when I started..it was in a 55 Chev, but then the 55 got a 540 inch motor (860 HP...TH400, 4.56 spool...!!) So I figured....new pistons and rings...a little machine work, and I would have that hurdle beaten!! It was quite a thrill to take an all steel 55 (3650 lbs) and cut a 1.40 60 foot time!! I'm wondering how well the Cobra will hook up when it's done....

searanch 06-25-2002 07:50 PM

Hey Bowtie,

Nuttin wrong with a chebie. My current flavor is an LS1 in C5 dress puttin out 405HP factory stock.

I am also considering a Seville STS 300HP motor - amazing what you can do with one converting it to RWD, some head and cam work - cheap, reliable and efficient compared to FE and SB Ford motors. Some folks in Calif are doin amazing things with this motor - got my attention.

Go for it and don't look back...

ls1ac 06-26-2002 05:54 PM

There were two vipers, one buick, two chevys at DVSF that I saw.
A 350 with ford valve covers, and my ls1.
The most common was the 5 Lt. but there were a lot of hot big blocks.
Maybe more veriety next year?

LS1AC,

did you notice the black BB Chev powered one in the middle of the main street towards the back. It was very nicely presented but I never got to speak to the owner. Not sure who's kit it was either.

It was nice to meet you at the fling.

Cheers

Mike,
I did not see the BB. One I missed, can not understand why so few cars there.
Good luck with your finnishing, look forward to seeing pics when done.

Look Darlin Mr. Bowtie appears to be a Chevy Man. Now I really hate him! ;)

It is your car so build it anyway you want. I have a Hunter Cobra with Corvette suspension and a 5.0 Ford. On the resale market for Cobras Non-Ford Motors bring much less than Ford Motors. I have even heard that some Mild 5.0 Ford motored Cobras bring more than a Big Block Chevy powered Cobra. Now if you already have a motor then by all means use it.

CobraDan 06-29-2002 05:07 AM

The black Classic Roadster with the Chevy BB was Randy Gallahger from Ohio. Jack May had the Chevy SB with Ford valve covers and the loudest sounding Cobra there( I know he had it parked next to my room) it was installed in a Everett Morrison. John Spina had the Everett Morrison with the 3.8 Turbo powered Buick. I had the Elegant Motors Yellow/white with a 454 BB Chevy with over heating problems because it was not really broke in and was over heating in the HOT summer of Ohio. I couldn't wait till I got back to Florida where it was much COOLER, now that we have our summer rains. Jack May and John Spina both turn in the 10 second bracket in the quarter mile. Think replica.

hmmm...aumoore is talking about resale value...now why would want to sell my creation? perhaps I would sell it if it had a small block ford motor in it... JK aumoore!!

wilf leek 07-03-2002 03:48 AM

Bowtie - you perhaps ought to move to the UK, where a majority of Cobra replicas employ Chevy engines, despite my constantly telling them that this is a sign of a heathen!

Also, of course, I defend their right to do whatever they damm well choosy with their cars!! (so long as they fall to their knees muttering "we are not worthy" every time my own Ford-powered car arrives).

Clois Harlan 07-03-2002 05:39 AM

Way to go Wilf, tell it like it is!

I love my Cobra and I know it is a Bastard creation but I wouldn't think of putting anything but a Ford in it.

Get knee pads...

Here is my homage to Ford power installed in most cobras in all their various flavors...

Tom T. 07-03-2002 09:39 AM

Searanch--415 rwhp factory stock LS-1???

Would you mind letting me know how you managed that? Even the 2002 LS-6 motor is rated "only" at 405 hp, at the flywheel.

Hey Tom,

How about Lutz is my second cousin twice removed and he makes 'em special for me. How about I just don't know what the f*ck I'm talkin about. How about I'm puffing. How about - Nah...

I'll cop to it - I made an error I have corrected (edit the post) and thanks for pointing it out to me.

Bowtie 07-04-2002 03:31 AM

I look forward to pitting my Chev powered toy against any and all comers who employ a naturally aspirated , non-nitrous Blue oval engine. (On an actual drag strip of course...who in their right mind gets aggressive out on the public streets?) Win or lose, I will drink a toast to all Cobra builders, regardless of their choice as to which manufacturer causes the rumble when the driver mashes on the 'loud pedal'!!! Geez..I'm giddy with anticipation!!

Tom T. 07-04-2002 09:46 AM

Searanch,

No problema, amigo. Was hoping you had a way big tuning secret! Have a great 4th of July weekend!
