Should have it's own dedicated ground. I'm assuming it is still reading from the alternator as it winds down.
Cutting the aluminum? Ue a small pair of scissors, Medical scissors work best for me. Doesn't tear up the aluminum and allows for cutting larger curves. Nice and neat with just s little practice.
