Door latches, just throwing this out there
Classic Roadster door latches.... Why did they, probably the only ones, build a car with the door latch in the jamb and the pin in the door, and not the other way around? I'm building my car, don't have the doors and body in the shop at the moment and haven't put a lot of thought into it yet, so I'm just throwing this out there to see other thoughts, but has anyone looked into modifying it to reverse it so the latch is in the door, and the pin in the jamb, like every other build out there. Having the latches in the wheel well where dust and debris can be a problem, the hoakey bicycle cable lever (I almost threw them out when going through the parts boxes thinking they got thrown in there when someone was cleaning out the garage), just seems goofy. A nice set of latches from any of the parts dealers is only a few hundred bucks.
Anyone thought about modifying it the door latch system? |
I agree. You should be able to fit Cobra OEM style latches without too much trouble.

A standard Cobra door latch will not install easily do too the side impact steel beam in the door. I plan on using a electric solenoid door latch release.
https://www.jegs.com/i/Mr-Gasket/720/6188/10002/-1 I have not tried to fit them yet, but my CR1 came with rear inner fender liners. That should protect both the latch and the body from road debris. My car goes (finally) to the body shop next week. He has a lift and we will test fit the liners at that time. I figure I will cut an access hole and add a removable cover for access. |
My CRII is modified that way with the latch inside the door.

Suggest you look at rockyhinge.com, I like the Bear claw system but they should have something that meets your needs, be aware that they as like many suppliers are having part supplier problems, so check that they have it in stock.

When I had my Classic Roadster I had the latches in the door like most of them do. I didn't care for the latch in the jamb setup.

That's a nice clean install Markantioch, clean simple, the manual latch is trick. And best of all the 80's 10 speed cable is gone!

That looks like a lot of turkey carving being done. A simple bungee rope would look cleaner.

That will also work but you'll need a 2-wire loom going from the body to the door to power it up. Mine uses 3 carriage bolts that keeps the mounting spots a their thickest.
