Ahhh, ok, I guess I can try a simple wire touching the housing to the frame and see if that does the trick.

I got it running! The issue ended up being both solenoid compatibility and grounding. I was trying to use a ford solenoid. The original solenoid was from a 55 era Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge. Once I put the old solenoid back on with a ground wire it fired right up. I was more than a little bit excited. See video :)
