Default Researching for future car

Looking at getting a CSX-6000 on the fence of going to auctions or ordering a new one. Has anyone ordered a new one who did you use and what were your experiences? I have wanted two cars since I was a kid and the Cobra is one of them. In northern Va would love to look at a CSX if anyone has one and pick your brain.

Thanks

Check out Denbeste's hoard (stock). He has a boatload of 4000s and 6000s with no waiting. Price it out and include power train purchase and installation (which you should get done at Olthoff). Then compare what you see at the auctions in the past. (You can't predict the future). There is some value is getting an already sorted-out car and that is some of the value over a have-it-built version. At a minimum you decide what that value is and start bidding but don't go over that.

You can order one from Shelby (actually, you order from Hillbank) but then you get in line and chances are Denbeste can come close to what you'd order if you went through all the options.

Right now it is very difficult to get engines built -- especially FEs but small blocks as well. Keep that in mind and scope it out with your engine builder before you commit to something.

I assume you are looking for a fiberglass CSX. Aluminum is a whole other issue.

I had a 4000 series Shelby and I prefer the ERA if we are talking about a fiberglass car. Maybe the 6000 series is better than the old 4000 series. I had print through and waviness on the fenders of CSX4236.

I have never seen any such issues, and frankly, I think ERAs are highly over rated as well. My CSX4005LA was perfect (it was also carbon fiber and built by HST).

In some ways it doesn't matter. You're looking at a year, possibly two, before your order for any of them will be delivered. Best to look at existing inventory and Denbeste has a whole wall full.

In any case, don't buy or take delivery of any car until you inspect it. I wouldn't do that with a Ford either.

PS. You should also monitor Cobra Country and Bring A Trailer.

You can get an aluminum car for something starting with a "2" like this:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1965-ac-cobra-20/
but remember this car was originally made in the late 90's. Now, a nice fiberglass car will cost you less, but nice CSX cars don't come up that often. If you buy the body alone you're going to have to put in a drive train, which means you have to have the engine built. Some of the better engine builders are not taking orders at present. If you fall in love with an ERA and want it custom made to your specs, you're going to have a long wait and you still have the drive train problem. Your best bet at the moment is to buy a used car that pleases your eyes (CSX, ERA, KMS, SPF, FFR, BDR, HMS all look different and all of us like different differences between them all).

I totally agree with Tony "AKA twobjshelbys" ERA are so overrated i purchased one back in 2005'ish and still own it today....The car starts every season without a problem and has never left me on the roadside....And what really bothers me about the ERA is that its an exact Replica to the original down to the last detail....If your heart desires.
I would steer clear of them Overrated cars at all expense, you will be sorry. I suggest purchasing a Continuation Replica with a 4000 or 6000 serial number......And besides, who would want to be able to pick up the phone and speak with Peter or Bob with any question you might have? Heck not me
Just my 2 cents

Prior to buying my Kirkham in 2007, I looked at a used fiberglass CSX in Saratoga, CA, IIRC. The CSX # was in the 4200's, again IIRC. The body had issues with waviness as well as fit and finish. I would have saved a ton of money by buying that car, which also had an early alloy Shelby block that was a leaker, which early alloy Shelby blocks were known to have.

Anyway, ERA's are not overrated IMO. I've seen plenty in my life, very early #'s to very recent. All other things being equal, I'd take the ERA over a CSX fiberglass car. FWIW, the CSX # is meaningless to me. That's my $0.02.

And of course, a beige car commands a premium.

I missed the “carve out” for beige Cobras, they’re all worthless. Fortunately, there’s only 1.
