Working on posting these pics. I have very few so far. Progress will be slow, but I continue to update when I can. Just curious if anyone can tell what this will be. Winner get a "no expenses paid trip" to tulsa for a ride.

Its a Daytona Coupe. Do I win?

951mat 08-06-2012 02:58 PM

Of course you win. You win an expenses unpaid trip to Hallett for the first track ride! Come on down! More pics to come. For some reason my home computer doesn't like to post pics. I can at work though.......strange.

Hallet sounds fun, but quite a drive from Phoenix... Good luck. Are you molding your own body and where did the molds come from? Quite a project!

Anything in the 10.00's is fast!

Russell, if Mat can't make it around Hallett in less than 1.30 he will be labled a wuss. I'm thinking he will be closer to 1:18 or less. His JBL Coupe is really taking shape and he has spent the time and research to get the right engine setup from Brent Lykins.

If having a former chassis engineer from Porsche (Richard Hudgens) design your platform doesn't help not much will. I have been following the his build weekly and I am at awe with the construction of the frame and body. Larry Goins is doing a masterful job. Mat is absolutely doing this thing right.

I am going to start the Rumor he is going to paint it pink.... :) but that would be a lie!

JBL Build Update

OK, its been a while, but we're getting close to something that's fun to show off in pictures. It been a lot of hard work (for Larry and my credit card). The frame is fairly complete except for getting boxed in. We'll have a B2Motorsports SB 427 engine to trial fit next Monday along with the the Tremec 6sp tranny. TeamIII wheels should be ready with rubber next week too. Brent Lykins did a great job for me on the engine. It will be a beast. (see the dyno chart below and his separate build thread if you haven't already!).

The main body has been fitted to the frame and it all fits like a glove. Larry spent a lot of time getting the body perfect. I'm confident you'll be able to tell when it all comes together. And you should see how the doors fit, wow. I'd show you the seams, but they are hard to see:)

In case you haven't seen one, this chassis is basically a JBL competion series chassis with a cage mounted to it. (see jblmotor.com) It will feature, IRS, inboard shocks front and rear, cockpit adjustable sway bars, Wilwood 6 piston calipers up front and 4 pot in the rear, full belly pan, and hopefully a few other tricks Richard and Larry will design/fit into the car.

Larry's got a lot of work left to do, but is making great progress. Next week will be a big week. I'll post more pics as progress continues.

Tires delivered NT05s

Just like a Johnny Cash song, "one piece at a time"! These should make for a nice agressive street tire. 315s and 275s. Good for getting the feel of the car at the track too. Maybe I'll get real race rubber for xmas.

very cool! Always loved the JBL engineering, and with a hard top? Killer!! More car porn pics please...

951mat 09-21-2012 07:35 PM

Like I said, one piece at a time.... Just another component.

Saw the frame today, doesn't look a lot different, but its getting boxed in, or "skinned" if you will. Hopefullly it will be all skinned tomorrow. Lots of sanding/grinding Monday and it will be prepped for paint.

Frame progress

Frame is 90% done, besides paint. Engine should definately be there tomorrow. Wheels/tires mounted. Some plumbing components will be here in a few days. I suspect by end of the week we'll have engine/trans mocked up with body/wheels on car for trial fit.

What is your final solution for the dry sump plumbing that you asked us about?
Still in rear or passenger compartment? Hard lines or braid?

Clois Harlan 09-25-2012 05:33 AM

I will let Mat asplain but I went over to the JBL shop with him on Friday and they were mocking up the oil tank location to be in the drivers rear. That is going to be a great car when it is finished. I know Mat is counting on having it ready by RNG but I just don't see how it will be done by then. :(

951mat 09-25-2012 06:57 AM

Tank will go behind left rear wheel in the fender well. Hardline in and out. That will minimize braided hose. I think it will be a clean installation. Will be mocking it all up this week. Engine/trans and plumbing. Should be interesting.

Well, quite a bit more work has gotten done in the last week. Frame is 95% done. Oil tank mount done, fuel/oil line designs are done in our head anyway. Since Friday, we set engine in bay enough to see it will fit. Thanks goodness. The high port heads are going to make header construction easier. They'll come over the frame rails, giving us more room underneath for oil lines.

Here's a pic of the body with engine suspended in prep for motormount install. They are now fabbed up along with trans mount.

Here's a some pics showing oil pan clearance next to frame rail. Motor mount and dry sump pump visible as well. Hopefully the line won't be too tough to run to the rear of car.

A couple of interior pics shows tons of space, at least until we start putting stuff in there, dash, seats, AC, wiring, etc...

This week, we should have lots more parts in. Fuel tank, radiator, hard lines for oil/gas, brake components, plus much more. A little more fitting and frame will be ready for paint. Then we can start bolting stuff on for real.

Matt,
That is one of the coolest builds I've ever seen. I predict you'll like Brent's motor ALOT!:D
