Default My old CCX...... Revisted

Wanted to share with you all the story of my old CCX. I was recently sent new pictures of a restored 1982 Contemporary Cobra.

This car was initially built by Morton Jaguar, Chelmsford MA for Bob Columbosian the founder of Columbo Yogurt in 1982. I was told that in the early phases the car had 427 SO installed and Bob was going to use it for his racing (track only) pleasure. That said it sounds like the SO was problematic to the point of replacement thus 428 was installed. The 428 was subsequently ruined mechanically and Bob wanted out from under this car, a money pit. Brian Morton talked Bob into a 351 swap ultimately telling him this will be a reliable alternative to the FE. After the engine swap the car was registered for road use in 1985. At that point the car was run on the track but also the road for his pleasure. Years later it was sold to the second owner in Concord MA, a golfer with no mechanical aptitude. (the guy I bought the car from)

After 5-6 years of ownership he decided to sell the car and I was owner #3. I made small changes to the car and these were documented here on the forum in the CCX section.

In my custody I installed:
Radiator swap and correct tilt back designed by yours truly
Correct roll bar installed by yours truly based of CSX3020 dimensions
Turkey pan install
Floor mounted pedal box designed and installed by yours truly
Pin drive conversion (Thanks Vintage Wheel for machining to spec)
Hood rivots
Paint under hood
Installed correct forward bend shifter
Added correct 16" steering wheel
Removed radio
Added trans tunnel down tubes
etc.......

I had the car roughly 5 years and decided to sell so I could chase 289 options....

The car was sent to the land down under to Craig, the CAV manufacturer. He seemed to enjoy the car until it was time to pass it along to Stefano, another Club Cobra member. Hence the unveiling of the newly polished CCX3682 Great resto by Craig and I am sure a new 20 year loan on life for CCX3682.

CONGRATULATIONS Stefano Awesome car!

Looks great, this is a 1982 Contemporary Classic that in my opinion could stand toe to toe with any replica made today.

Nice story Jeff. Good to see that it's thriving here in Australia.
I can't tell from the picture ....what engine does it have now?

Cheers,
Glen

I like the gold alodine color on the wheel centers. Have been thinking about doing mine.
Do you know how those were done ? On your watch ? Paint or stripped and alodined ?

I tracked down one of my old cars and still stare at it in the pics. Chokes me up sometimes with all the memories. A '61 Ford Starliner with a fresh 427 SO and toploader. Unfortunately, he won't sell it back to me for the $500 I sold it for back in the late 70's!
I will post a pic.
Always good to hear that folks stay in touch with their old cars and memories and to know that whoever has it is taking care of it....

That is a very interesting story and the Cobra has fared very well over the years. It looks great. My old Cobra is in Arkansas and so is my 1965 Comet that was the best looking car I ever owned. The others that I have managed to track down were wrecked and have been destroyed.

I like that. I took driving lessons in my Mom's 1960 Ford and always wanted a 60 or 61 Starliner. It would have been a practical car for going off to school in - I think I could have lived in the trunk and rear seat space of one. They were so wide you had to be really careful pulling in through our 7 ft. wide garage doors.

When I had it I had a 406ci with factory cast headers and tri-power holleys.
Apparently the current owner found a nice medium riser 427 for it.

I don't want this to be a reflection of Stef's photography skills, but the car looks way better in the flesh than in the photos!
Beautiful car!
Jeff just a small correction - Craig is the owner of Absolute Pace, not CAV. https://www.facebook.com/AbsolutePace/?ref=ts&fref=ts

Ahh...penny has dropped....this was Craig White's wife's car!! I'm on the right page now.
I haven't seen it in the metal and glass....but I know it's a very nice car.

Cheers,
Glen
