only 5 original coupes remain??

Saw this statement on the Shelby website. I thought all 6 were still accounted for. And Jay Leno did the interview with the guy that owns the long lost Phil Spector coupe... Has one been totalled recently?

http://www.shelbyautos.com/carinfo.asp

...Of the 6 original cars that were built and raced in the mid 1960s, only 5 remain.

Mike,

Rumor has it that 8 long lost Coupe bodies and chassis's have been found in a CS owned warehouse in Australia's outback. No details yet on the discovery of these right hand drive "export only" Coupes has been made public.

Sometimes, when a web designer revamps a site, he holds onto old content from the previous site. Shelby Autos re-did their site a few years ago....

...on their old site, that text was there for the Coupe history.
They never changed it when the "lost" coupe was found.

You can see that old website design still online with Shelby Europe...
...which also has the inaccurate number.

Yes, there are 6. :p

Shelby Europe - finger on the pulse then...??

Does CS want a deposit for 1 of those aussie imports ?

RodKnock 01-14-2009 10:12 AM

Personally, I would opt for the Kirkham Coupe.

WOW! that's juicy rumor - any truth to it??

Doug I 01-14-2009 11:03 AM

They were shipped to Australia in early '65 for aerodynamic speed tests as the outback has plenty of long straight level roads where sustained high speed tests could be conducted. The problem with them is that as they were "test mules" they don't have VIN plates.

Trevor Legate 01-14-2009 12:55 PM

Uh Oh, I was wondering how long it would be before that story got out of the bag!!! Now for the feeding frenzy! I had to keep a lid on that saga for sooo long now, but the documents I was shown by Brian Angliss kinda supported the odd rumor of the unmarked chassis (for Customs & Excise purposes) that were shipped to Oz from Thames Ditton. I thought the story was far more interesting than the Paramount chassis two-step, but I was made to promise (pain of death by lawyers) to keep that one close - no doubt BA had his own plans for those autos....I've never discovered who finished the cars, always assumed it was guys 'on holiday' from SAI. Maybe the higher authorities know more?

Only "Da Koalas" know the details.....

I know Chris Amon was one of the drivers, as he was somewhat local being a NZer and knew how to drive a fast car quickly. I'll see if he has any pics from the COBRA (Coupe OutBack Racing Analysis) days

"Of the 6 originally made, all 14 still exist!"

Doug I 01-14-2009 02:14 PM

6 had VIN plates so they could be raced.

These 8 didn't as they were simply 'mules' used to test ideas for high speed stability.

Geez you american guys are slow, We have known about these Aussie Cobra coupes for years, mind you we didnt want Shellzbutt & Co to find out so we really dont talk about them much! Had the offer to bring a couple back to NZ in 81, but really they were in such bad shape & full of snake eggs & oil etc that I passed on the offer, that along with no papers or past ownership trail was going to make it a dodgy deal at best to sneak back into Kiwi-land. There have been several evolutions of them since like the Bolwell Nagari, and a mid 70's version by Ford won Bathurst with a 1st/2nd placeing back in the seventies as well. Been trying to build my own ever since! :)

The sixth car was the big block coupe that was sold uncompleted when SAI closed shop:

http://www.russoandsteele.com/collec...oupe/5954.html

Unless I'm mistaken all the cars are alive and well. Spector's car was the only MIA recently resurfaced.

Didn't know about the Aussie coupes...

JBo 01-15-2009 06:22 AM

coupes

I have it on good authority that these "aussie" coupes were actually built under a lisence from SC (or is it CS) in Malta with the subassemblies being done in South Africa. Components were sourced from China and Korea, labor was forced from old EU nations. Cars bodies are reputed to be not aluminum...but rather made from "unobtainium" with a pinch of strongium for rigidity. Frames are done in the true Morgan fashion, but laminated.

were they Union shops and funded with Bail Out money ? Bill
