Toploader took a dump!
Man, I can't believe it! Saturday a buddy and me drove our cars from north Dallas (Flower Mound) to Fort Worth for a little get-together at Lonestar. Sam, (my buddy) left a little sooner than me because I was too busy jacking my jaw. So when I left, I decided to drive back up 35W by the speedway. While driving,I noticed the road was fairly clear, so I thought I would do some high speed testing of sorts. (You never know how accurate those gearing calculators are). So, after bumping the car into the triple digits a few times, I came to my exit and couldn't downshift. All I had was shifter movement but wouldn't catch any gear but 4th. Once I found 2nd, but only once. Then it was 4th all the way home. What the heck happened? This trans has about a 1000 miles on it.

Could be as simple as the gear shift linkage nuts are loose, making gear selection darn near impossible. You found second, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile. :D
Lets hope thats all it is, check were the linkage rods are fastened at the trans with a nut, or the linkage itself (rods, gear shift, etc)... |

Are you using an original Ford shift linkage? Bud:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE |
Actually, it sounds like either the linkage had/has come loose or the shifter handle has come loose. It does not sound like the trans.
IMHO, you need to put loctite blue on a small portion of the threads for the shifter and the rods. Blue will allow you to remove the nuts and bolts, but act like a Nylon washer behind the nut(s). :D |
Thanks for the responses. I haven't had the time to lift the car up to check the linkages. I hope that's all it is, it is what it feels like too. Anthony, David Kee built the trans, so it's got to be correct. Bud, I got the linkages from Dan Williams Toploader.
Thanks guys! Tim |
OH! A David Kee top loader? Pfffttt, gotta be linkage.

It's the linkage!
|
I still haven't had time to look yet, but I sure hope you guys are right! And thanks for your inputs..

Well, I lifted the car up, and just like you guys thought, the large bolt that holds all the gear linkages together backed out. I just put it back in and I'm good as new. I should have known better.. :o
Thanks guys... |
