Only 94 miles from where I live to Cypress Gardens. But, I also have been to Savannah and Roebling Road and like that area very much. The trip would be longer (415 miles) but the Savannah area is really very nice. JVOB |
No problem-will help. HAve been driving from dwn here to Cincinnati
since 1971! I can read Club Cobra fm home, just can't post. cb My first volunteer Charles Bering for Atlanta Georgia. The first thing to look into is a place to hang our hats for all day Saturday and Sunday and a date. March or April of 2003 would make it one year from our last gathering but it likes to rain at this time of year in Atlanta. You have 7-8 months to plan unless you change the date. We can't have a rain date, what ever date is picked we have to live with, come rain or shine. The real problem is when you sign up and don't show. Our club has no dues so funds are in short supply, we need a Saturday evening Banquet. Signing up for a 100 plate banquet and then have only 50 show means trouble for our Treasurary. I will help as much as I can, but being 9-10 hours away it won't be much other than my attendance. Dan |
From the Big Easy:
Cypress Gardens, 631 mi, 11h20m Savannah, 615 mi. 11h26m I would have to vote for Savannah. |
Dan....I will be more than happy to donate ...say $250....toward the organization of this event....on the condition that we charge some fee, and reimburse the investors. If we can get a few more willing to do this, we'll build some seed money and should permit more definite planning. Charging some sort of entry fee isn't unheard of, and I think most would be willing to pony up a few bucks to have some fun.
I am indeed aware of the risk of doing this, and will accept what comes....if I lose money, well, it won't be the first time..... .....but, if we make enough to get reimbursed.....I hope it won't be the last. How 'bout it guys....anyone care to put their money where their mouth is? ;) BTW, Dan...I'm there no matter where it is.....if I can be. Since I lost my Dad in May, it's a little easier to get out of town. |
What about Jekyll Island or Amelia? Its right on the GA/FL border and at the most 8 hours from anywhere in Ga or Fl Except maybe Keywest). Beautiful area and not as many crowds, traffic, crime as Savannah.
|
Dan,
The Talladega Road Race Track is just to the east of Birmingham AL. We have the Unique Home Coming there every year the first week of May and always race on this track against time. Any of the locations suggested so far are OK with me, except Oregon and Bahamas. |
Savannah seems to be winning !
Roebling road is in Savannah, for those that did not know [url]www.roeblingroad.com |
First off we have no member that lives in Savannah and only one volunteer so far and his vote was Atlanta.
We now have 302 members in 8 states: FL-136 AL-28 GA-54 KY-1 LA-11 MS-2 NC-20 SC-22 TN-15 Unknown-13 Total 302 Dan |
I vote with JW on Savannah! With Roebling road, and the beach at Hilton Head what could be better? Do a show and shine somewhere in Savannah, and track time at Roebling Road.
DC |
I just added up the membership in Florida and Georgia it comes to 190 members out of 302. The majority of our membership is in these two states. I took the lowest point in Florida, Miami with membership and all the way north to the Georgia boarder and Cypress Gardens is Mid Point:LOL: Savannah has been given a few votes but I have no one yet willing to take on the task of running the show. After going to Ohio the last two years and this year towing my car seeing and meeting people from all over, I know that if your really interested in meeting a group of Cobra Gearheads you will come.

I agree with the jist of your comments. We don't need to be voting where in the world each of us would like the event to be. Rather, we need to be choosing from among the events that someone has volunteered to arrange. So far, it looks like there is only one event on the table - yours. So my vote, as of today, goes to your proposal. Thanks for volunteering to take this on. |
Jerry Rowley has just incorporated our club in Alabama recently. Jerry is ready to make sure we have club insurance so we would have even more protection. We are waiting for a reply from K&K Insurance. This would cover us in the request by Cypress Gardens for one million dollars of event insurance. As far as any racing event programs we would not be covered. What are we looking for in our annual event? Arrive on Friday, so you can prepare for a great Saturday and Sunday weekend. Activities in a location that has plenty of trailer parking and also a place to park all the Cobras for a car show. A Motel or Motels close to the activities. Some place to entertain and keep everyone in the Cobra families happy incase of rain or shine. A banquet on Saturday evening to present awards, vote for officers to our club, and have a general meeting to forge ahead for next year. We would need Dash Plaques, T-Shirts and Trophies to commemorate the event. We need restaurants located in the area of our activities and close to the Motel, a plus would be a continental breakfast included in the price of the Motel. ½ hours drive, and then attend a large Saturday weekly cruise- in. The main thing is to meet with friends you met last year and to meet all the new people that would attend this year. We need the help of all our members that supply us with our Cobras and Cobra accessories. In fact I haven’t had any Cajun food since Friday evening in McDonough, Ga. I have changed many of our members from enthusiast to Cobra owner, but have also signed many new enthusiasts to our membership. I guess with all the suggestions, if no one actually comes forward to run the show there will be no 3rd. annual event.

Dan,
I am game for any venue any date! I am still Cobraless so it matters not how far away the event is(I'll be riding in a comfy old suv). As for as helping out, I don't think I'm close enough to any of the proposed places to do any good? I am more than willing to help out but don't know how I can? I'm good with orders but don't have a clue how to set up an event of this size. Chad |
Chad,
When you arrive at what ever we eventually have come and see me I'll put you to work. We need help with a lot of little things once we get to our location. Thanks for everyones input so far, keep it coming. Dan |
Cypress Gardens or Savannah... either one is fine with me, really. I'm not sure how much I can help with organizing the event from this distance (for either location). I'm slightly familiar with Savannah, but I've never been to CG. Organizing last year's GA event was easier for me because of my family ties in the area and I was always out there visiting. Let me know if I can help in any way, Dan.
Also, I might be able to give you some pointers based on a few mistakes and hiccups we had with last year's event. One of the biggest headaches was the registration process. It was much more cumbersome than we had expected. If I make it this year, I'll be happy to volunteer to do some of the hundred little tasks that such events require. Keith :) |
Dan, besides my offer for $250 up front money, I'll offer to do what ever I can do to lend help with the computer end of this effort. I'm a giant with almost all MS products....although not an 'Excelguru', I can make Excel talk most of the time. Keith knocked himself out last year, least I can do this year is to help share some of this burden.
I'm also willing to come into town a day or two early to help put the final touches on things, if need be. This far in advance, I don't see a problem I can't overcome with some planning, and barring any last minute hiccups. Where, when, do you need me to send my money....? Freddie "Not Afraid to Put His Money Where His Mouth Is" Rice |
Fred and Keith,
Fred we don't need your money yet and I think I can handle setting this thing up but would need help during the event to keep problems at a minimum. As Keith said we had some problems last year with registration, it's always nice to win an award and be able to know who to present that award to. If we get enough volunteers to help we won't need anyone to have to tie up his entire weekend and not be able to join in the fun. If all I had to do was get into my Car and travel to the party I wouldn't think twice as to how far, I would just go. I need to talk with the lady from Cypress and get a few answers to some questions I have come up with, and eventually I would drive up and make the arangements. I'll be on vacation from Sept.3-20th and when I get back I will start making some firm commitment on our 3rd. annual meeting. Dan |
A VACATION...YOU'RE TAKING' A VACATION?
Damn, Dan....what I want to know is what does a retired guy do on his 'vacation'? Whatta ya do...take a break from bein' retired...? How do you do that, Dan....? Do ya go to work somewhere part time for two weeks?
Man, that's got to be the height of nuthin'...whatta you think, Keith? Gee, here I thought I knew all about gettin' lazy and all laid back and all that, and here's CobraDan takin' a vacation from bein' frickin' retired..... YOU, SIR, ARE MY IDOL! :p |
Flyin_Freddie
I'm getting together with some snowbird friends before winter sets in up north and this way I don't have to entertain them from this end.:D Actually the wife set this thing up, she still works but gets ants in her pants if we are not running someplace. I think this is it for this year except going to the Reptile Roundup in November and the Turkey Run. I can't travel up north after October, BRRRRRRRRR. Dan & Jean:LOL: |
I think there is a lot to learn from re-reading this thread.
From the very beginning there was a great amount of discord amongst the membership. Had we had the event in Savannah, it would have been the same result , but with a different group of 20 cars. I think the future of the club will be found in a greater number of smaller gatherings. Attendance will determine popularity and forecast the slate of events for future years. We can use this forum for matters of Club-wide importance. In the future if somebody is trying to have an event, RSVP. It is the only polite thing to do, and it is a great help to the host. It should be obvious to all that Dan and others worked on stuff for the benefit of the club and their efforts were not appreciated enough to at least offer regrets for not being able to attend. Just my opinion, JW |
