New DSCC track for Alabama crowd

OK,
For all the guys that live too far north to attend
Gainesville, I am working on a deal with the Talladega Grand Prix track.

http://www.tgprace.com/images/Trkpic1.jpg

1.35 mile road course.
The cost to run is approx $3,300 per day.
5-6 cars on the track at one time.
Passing allowed with hand signals.

Lesser events such as Ride and Drive (no passing or time-keeping) will lower the cost by $300.00

Let me know who's interrested.
Please include a preferred month and how much you are willing to pay.
If we get enough guys I'll make the arrangements.
It's an 11+ hour drive for me so if I cant make it, Ruble or Keith may handle this event in my absence.

You can post here or e-mail me at:

Ed, I'm planning on visiting my Brother and family in North Tampa in the near future. I would tow my Cobra to take advantage of the warm Florida weather. Do you guys have any local get togethers planned?

Engineer Ed 02-12-2004 10:43 AM

When are you planning on coming down?
I am hosting a big Cobra party on March 13th.
I think there will be approx 15 Cobra's, hopefully more!
Poker run and then dinner at my place.

Before that, March 6th (1st Saturday) is a big car show in Dade City. The local Cobra guys get together for this every month.

Please let me know what time frame you are referring to and I'll see if I can set something up.

Ed,
It's a little early as my birthday is on March 16, I'll be 65. Tell us more of this gathering as I would bring along a Birthday Cake but no candles unless the Fire Department is also invited.

Ed,

I've actually rented this track several times in the past with the SVO Club of America. Every year, the owner has gone up in price. It's a shame - cause it's a really fun track and he's making it where it's getting harder and harder to foot the bill. We stopped even thinking about it because of this. I heard the Alabama SAAC club has mentioned they're not renting it anymore because of price increases as well.

Maybe now that the Barber track is open - he's having less demand for his, but it use to be if you were waiting until Feb to book a weekend event date, you were looking at Oct - Nov as the earliest open day.

They only allow 4 cars on the track at a time. It's a good thing because now there's no need to corner workers with that few.

You can put me on a tenative list, but it all depends on the final price per entrant. The track is not a high standard of an example - and paying more than $150 per .. is way out of the question. Especially when Road Atlanta is hosting several open track events a year with the price being a tad over $200 per.

Ed,

I will post a link of this on the Atlanta site as well as that is only 1.5-2 hours away from here.

MRITTER 02-12-2004 04:12 PM

I spoke with the owner about the track rental earlier today and there are at least 2 weekends open almost every month except June. I got the impression that he might be willing to negotiate a little on the price.

Maybe I was just hoping. He was very inquisitive about how much we paid at Gainesville though.

Needless to say, I'm in.

Well, let me try a little quick math here.....

20 drivers @ $165 each.
8 hour day.
5 cars on the track at a time.
About 2 hours track time each.

I'm game. :) Want to chase the Monster?

cobramandave 02-12-2004 05:51 PM

About the same drive time for me. Four or five cars on track will give us a lot more track time. I'll go for that.

With more competition in the neighborhood he may have dropped his price some. Aint competition great.

Last time I looked the monster was doing the chasing.

Have a Great Day

Tony Radford 02-13-2004 02:53 AM

Ed, I'm going to mark my calander for the 13th. I'll RSVP if it looks like I can make it. Thanks.

Tommy 02-13-2004 05:44 PM

Ed -
I've run this track twice with the Alabama SAAC and I like it better than Gainesville because it is much easier to get time on the track. I also like being able to follow a fast car to get a better feel for the right racing line. I'd like to go with the DSCC if we can get a day for no more than 25 drivers for under $200 each. ... Two more advantages come to mind. The parking area has lots of trees with shade, and there is an air conditioned viewing area so pit crew and drivers can get a break from the heat on hot days.

66cobraboy 02-14-2004 06:08 AM

I will be in for this as long as I dont have to work on the date you pick.

I've raced on this track several times and it's a fun track. It has banked turns, skid pad turns, just the right length straights for our Cobras, etc. and is fun to figure out the best way to attack each of the turns. The turns are all different so you can't use the same technique on each corner.

I'd like to attend also if my work schedule doesn't interfere. What date are you considering?

Engineer Ed 02-16-2004 04:28 AM

Sounds like me may have enough guys to book an event.
I'll call and see what weekends are available and post the options.

Sounds great to me. **) I will follow the thread for date, and costs.

Hope you can make it.

Last I heard, Barber is $10k per day, so I don't think they are stealing too much of his business.

Dwight 02-18-2004 06:39 PM

I'M INTERESTED

CobraDan 02-19-2004 01:50 AM

Dwight ,

Were counting on you to get the word out to Alabama.

Well, the Porsche club guys use to rent TGPR at least once a month. My understanding, once the Barber track opened things up for rental .. they stopped going to TGPR at all. Just rumor-control .. ya know, gossip around the paddocks .. and the info could be wrong.
