It's here! The continuing saga of Jenny's motor. Do you have any spare parts?
It's finally done! :)
Columbus Col-Weld, a huge machine shop in Columbus was chosen to take the donated 289 Jenny motor and bring it back to life. Maynard, the owner has attended both Flings and was kind enough to donate all the labor for the Kirkham Aluminum 289 FIA Cobra. U-2, Jeff, got us a fantastic set of 289 Hi-Po heads out of California and sent them our way. Jeff, Maynard (the owner of Col-Weld) said those heads had been worked to perfection! However he thought he would do a little upgrading for us. He removed the Ford valves and springs, Replaced them with the Chevy 1.90 and 2.02's. Now those heads are going to breathe! Then he decided that .010 off the heads would square up the heads and raise the compression a wee bit. Now it was time to eliminate those non Hi-PO "dished" pistons. Flat tops were put in after taking .020 out of the cylinders. The Crank was polished, the block was lined bored and of course, after much discussion a medium "thumper" HYDRAULIC cam was installed, with of course new lifters, matched springs and pushrods. The heads use ARP screw in studs and of course Maynard has used guide plates for the pushrods! In fact he even went to the trouble of using ARP heads studs instead of the regular head bolts. He is "guessing" the compression is just below 10! Maynard was great to say the least! He would call and say he would like to do this and that and I would instantly whine about not having that kind of money to spend. We had to have a "solid" motor built for Jenny, but we really wanted to pump up the motor a little bit. He'd simply say something like, "well...let me figure something out". I finally get the call that it is ready for us to pick up. I know with all the new parts and labor we're looking at a bill well over $2,000.00! The Mrs. and I both decided if in fact it did go over $1,000.00, then we would somehow come up with the money. This very special Cobra could not be short changed! Arriving at Col-Weld, Maynard greets us with a smile as big as a Halloween pumpkin! Now, Maynard is 64 years old, been in his line of business all his life and has seen just about everything related to motors that you can see. But, this was different. He knows who Jenny is, he has seen Jenny's FIA and I know he was extremely proud that we picked him to do the rebuild! He guided Mrs. DV and myself around the shop to where this new and beautiful Cobra heart was resting. All crated and wrapped in plastic, just waiting to be brought to life. With the pride of a true craftsman, Maynard pulls back the plastic for our inspection. Only a car nut can appreciate this, but this motor was beautiful! Here she sat in all her glory, de-rusted, clean as a whistle, and all repainted. Her fly wheel had been cleaned and ground to perfection. She is now ready to come home and take her place in history! But, alas, now comes the rest of the story. Maynard, I say with a slight quiver in my voice, what do we owe you Sir? Without so much as a quiver he says, "How about $700.00?" I just about faint! I know for a fact the parts are probably twice that much and the hours spent on labor alone should have come up well over $1000.00! I grab Mrs. DV and tell her to write the check quick before Maynard can change his mind! We head back to the office and Maynard starts picking at his computer. He continues to hit and peck for what seemed an eternity, finally in a futile attempt to get the computer to do what he wants to do, he simply turns to the Mrs. and says just make it out for $600! Seems he was trying to delete all the labor charges on the bill, leaving the parts and the part descriptions. Bottom line, Maynard will be hand writing a list of all the parts he installed and mail it to us so we all will know exactly what components went into Jenny's motor. Maynard, I know you probably wont see this, but "we love you man!" Jenny and the rest of our Cobra family thanks you! All parts are for a '65 era 289 What we still need to fire of Jenny's motor: Carb. (at least 600CFM) Mr Mustang Water Pump Distributor Lincolnland- MSD ! Dip Stick "TUBE" -we have the dipstick. DV, I have a new clutch system sitting on my shelf. It's a 10". If it will fit it's yours.
Don |
DV , is the block your using a 5 or 6 bolt ? i'm guessing that your using a 6 bolt block (65 and later) if so i may be able to donate a bell housing (ansen , 2 piece cast steel blowproof) it would be correct for the car and the era. please email me if your interested ...........john

MSD System
DV--
Just put a MSD System in my car and it works great!! So, looks like Jenny's car will get one also. Send me an e-mail and let me know how I can do it for ya-- Mark:D |
DV,
I've got the original Holley HP carb off my old "tweaked" 351W/385hp Ford crate engine. It's yours, I'll get it out to you Monday or Tuesday of this coming week. Should be jetted and tweaked just right for that warmed over 289 engine....Just bolt it on and go............ Yours In Fords, Bill S. |
This is fantastic! I'm getting all kinds of offers to help complete Jenny's motor via the cobra sites and e-mails. Just an update, I think Mr Viagra will be taking care of the electrical part, and Gordan has volunteered to get us a shifter. (Have to confirm this up though.)As you can tell from my original post, Mr Mustang is doing the Carb, and Weendoggy has already locked in the clutch sytem. I didn't hammer Weendoggy for the Hydraulic throw-out bearing as this alone is a bit pricey. Anyone up to supplying this?
CSX700?: I went through our "bomb room" yesterday. I knew I had some type of small block OEM bellhousing lying around somewhere! Lo and behold! I found it. It is a stock OEM '65 aluminum housing and bolts right up. I do however have no qualms at all about using your blow proof housing! I guess the question is, if you really want to donate it, then by all means I will use it. Let me look today to see if it is a 5 or 6 bolt. I honestly can't remember! Still would like some input about the fuel pump? Electric, or should we keep it OEM with a mechanical? If anyone is interested and can tell me how to post it, I will take a short video of installation and firing for the first time! DV...you guys are amazing! |
DV,
I'm having Summit send a Holley HLY-12-289-11 mechanical pump. Chrome, 3/8" in and out, 110 gph @ 6-8 psi. If that isn't what you want call them and get what you need; they have my info. and O.K. See you in June when I come to win the car, Jeff |
Jeff,
That is Fantastic!!!!!!! I'm ready to bolt her up! Damn...You guys make this is FUN! DV...speechless, once again :) Classics by Elite, Inc. Attn. DV 3212 Old Columbus Rd. London, Ohio 43140 740-852-5280 3212 Old Clumbus Rd. |

i'd be happy to donate the bell housing.i think you need to find out what trans you plan to use though.this bell housing is set up for the narrow pattern top loader..........john |
csx...
David Kee supplied the new toploader. I haven't even taken it out of its shipping crate yet! OK, showing my ignorance "narrow pattern," VS...???? wide pattern? And what is the key to differentiate? DV |
DV, I will be replacing my starter on my GT-350. Count me in for a new starter (I'll just order two from the Parham's and have one shipped to you.)...EDIT> I saw you have a starter and somebody beat me to it. I sent SAE the list of what you still needed and we will come up with something.
|
DV
the narrow pattern mounts are nearly flush with the trans case and were usually early top loaders.the wide pattern was available usually after mid '65 and later top loaders and have mounting ears that sit away from the trans case, you will need to know which trans you have regardless of which bell housing you use, some bell housings have both patterns.the ansen that i have was actually from a tiger.............john |
CSX700?, OK then, I've been forced to open up David Kee's brand new transmission. I now know exactly what you are referring too. I've been using T-5's for so long now I simply forgot the details on those top-loaders.
Guys, keep an eye on the first post here. I'm going back an editing the list of parts as they come in. We're way over half way there! I should start receiving a lot of the needed parts today! By the weekend I hope to start bolting her all together. My guys in the shop said they'd stick around evenings, or even come in on the weekend to help if we have everything! Here's our address once again for those that may yet be able to help :3DSMILE: Classics by Elite Attn., DV 3212 Old Columbus Rd. London, Oh 43140 (740-852-5280) Notice too, that Russ Tompson just donated a matching MSD Coil to Lincolnland's MSD donation. Me thinks we have now have the "sparks" ready to install. Befoe I totally forget, the distinguished gentlemen on the left is Maynard, with Pat, the machinist responsible for putty Jenny's Cobra motor together is on the right! And of course the guest of honor is in the middle! http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...colweld001.jpg |
Just for the sake of it, altho you probably have figgered it out by now - the block takes a 6-bolt bellhousing. 5-bolt housings went out by early '65, and this one is nominally a '66.
|
Nice to see Roadway wasn't able to destroy the shipping crate, at least.
|
TurnPike Boy...I know it isn't a close up, but even so did you ever think "your" motor would look that good! :)
For those that missed the earlier posts about the search for the proper motor for Jenny's FIA Cobra...may I introduce the guy that has made this heart transplant a reality...TURNPIKE BOY!!! Wait unitil I fire it up! Video at 11! (More on the up an coming video soon!) DV |
DV
i looked at the bell housing when i got home from work today.the bell housing is for the 6 bolt block it is presently setup for a narrow pattern trans but there is pre drilled holes for installing a wide pattern trans, the holes just need to be tapped for the mounting bolts .if you want it to install into jenny's car it's all yours,we just need to figure out the shipping (it's heavy)............john |
...........i'll tell you something nice about this bell housing though you don't have to remove it when doing clutch work, the bottom portion is removable.......john
|
John,
I located a pure stock Ford bell housing this week in our "bomb room". (I actually had one left over from my sons '65 Stang from years ago!) The question is, is not your bell housing better and safer for this car? If you want to donate your special bellhousing, if you want to take the time and effort to crate it up, we'll pay for the shipping! Just crate it strong please if you decide to send it! DV.. those shipping companys are hell on car parts! |
