ERA 427 with 428 and Holley carb want to swap for Edelbrock
OK.....I done screwing around with this Holley carb.....Runs PERFECT one day, next day runs like sh#t....I had the same issues years ago with a 66 Mustang GT fastback....Came with a Holley, never ran right, the local Ford expert swapped that Holley for an Edel and the car ran like a champ and I never had to touch that carb....EVER!!
So.....I have a Street driven.....NEVER TRACKED.....428 with solid lifters, Dove aluminum heads, and edelbrock intake and a single holley carb. I'd like to have electric choke on the new carb....Which edelbrock do I buy??? I'm in Rhode Island and was thinking about just bringing the car to ERA and having them swap out the carb and set it properly. Do they do this type of work??? Thanks. |
What exactly is it doing? Countless cars have Holleys carbs on them without issue...
|
I'm not interested in playing with this holley....
What Edelbrock do I need??? |
I don't know, edelbrocks are pretty inferior and I don't use them. How about I send you a quick fuel to bolt on and if you don't like it you can send it back. If it works then you can buy it.
There's a reason why your Holley isn't working...and an edelbrock may or may not fix it. |
Quick fuel????
|
Quick fuel is a brand of carb, the best around when Brent gets his hands on one, that is an offer you can't beat.
|
Good carbs for sure. But if you have intermittent issues, there may be something up besides the carb....
|
I really appreciate the offer...But the more I think about it the more I want to drop the car off at ERA and have them just tune it and replace the carb. The Edelbrock's I've had in the past were GREAT street carbs. They just ran. My old GT Mustang was transformed by that Edlebrock carb!!!!!

You'll be sorry. Vacuum secondary carbs are made for heavier cars. Not ours.
You're going to lose power and throttle response. I've had two cobras that originally came with vacuum secondary carbs. One was an edelbrock, the other a Holley street avenger. Swapped them both out for mechanical secondary carbs. Both engines woke up. Have your car tuned by a pro first before you assume it is the carb. Then, if the carb is the problem, either fix or replace it. Swapping for an Ed carb will present you with a bunch of new problems. |
Go ahead and get and Edelbrock. I've never used one and don't know anyone that has, but in your mind it works, so I would get one.
You gotta love people that ask questions, when their mind is already made up as to what they want. When they do that all they are looking for is someone to affirm their opinion. So here is your affirmation. |
"You gotta love people who ask questions when their mind is already made up."
Yea right!!!! The only problem with that is.......I DIDN'T ask how to FIX the Holley or SHOULD I get an edelbrock?....I just asked WHICH EDELBROCK to get. And.....You've "NEVER used one", so why even waste my time with your BS comment? The edelbrock I had on the Mustang had mechanical secondaries and this was the primary reason that old Ford expert recommended the switch from the Holley (which had vacuum secondaries) You are right about the car "waking up" after! I agree about having an expert tune it. I'll call ERA Monday and have them do the work. |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Edelbrock even makes a mechanical secondary carb any longer.
|
You are right.......Just checked their website.
Thanks guys for the info, advice and offers. I'll let the guys at ERA tune it and report back with their findings and the outcome. Thanks again folks!! |

If you insist on an Edel, you want a 1407, 750cfm with electric choke. But Edels are OK only on stock engines. If you have any duration at all on your cam, your Edel won't like it.
I've had several Edels on engines with lots of cam, had to ditch the Edels and go to Holley or a Holley clone. I'd eliminate all other possibilities before assuming its the carb. blykins knows his stuff, you'd be wise to listen to him. Good luck............... |
Hotfingrs.....
So YOU'RE the guy!!! Every site has one.... I've been here for a short time and received nothing but help and good advice. You're the only idiot so far. There's always ONE. Thanks for the advice Wideglidejoe....I appreciate you taking the time to explain the cam issues I could encounter. I am NOT married to the idea of having ONLY an Edelbrock carb...I just want something that works well and had some limited experience with them. The guys at ERA should be able to set me straight. If that means fixing some other mechanical issue, properly adjusting my existing Holley, ordering a Quick fuel, or whatever they recommend....I'm all in!! I love my ERA....Just getting frustrated with some minor stumbling issues....If I get nice off idle acceleration, the wot seems to suffer, if wot is good it stumbles off idle. I'm over my head here and I know it....I'll be the first to admit that....The Mustang had the same issues and a carb swap to an Edel fixed it....But this ain't no Mustang so I shouldn't assume the same fix will work. Thanks again everyone...... Well, except for our ONE GUY! |

Pretty quick to call someone you don't know names.... Until you do know me...keep your mouth shut when it comes to calling someone an idiot. The responses you got were all people trying to help you, but your mind was already made up, so why ask? |
Ahh OK.....Like calling someone you don't know NARROW MINDED?? Is that the QUICK you're talking about??
I agree with you 100%....You were WAY too quick to call me that....I mean without KNOWING me!! I also agree that with the exception of YOUR RESPONSE......Everyone here was trying to help me. Please....Stop NOW....The HOLE you're digging is just getting deeper. |
Gotta love being in a battle of wits against an unarmed man....go find a brain and come back and look me up...
|
Hit a NERVE did I???
I'll give you the last word.....You NEED it!! Sorry guy's for this BS. I'm done..... Go ahead idiot....Take your best shot |
