Out with the old, in with the new

Again ;)

Out with the old (Silver 289FIA), in with the new (427SC).

Have to keep them separated by a few feet so they do not fight with each other while still sharing the garage

Think that newby might need new piston rings this winter?

Nice color choice..........Bring it to Lake George.

Is that a CCX Bill?

Tim got it ;) ERA 717. The jury is still out on what it may need, only time will tell. For now, when I have the time, I'll do the usual compression and leak down tests, then use a flexible bore scope to dig deeper, maybe even pull the pan off before actually yanking the motor.

PS: Are there any casting/stamp marks on the Dove heads to differentiate between older and newer castings? I ask because I remember some time back that a pallet load of "defective" (overly porous) Dove heads disappeared from their loading dock. Want to make sure I do not have a set of those on my hands

DanEC 06-26-2013 11:47 AM

That looked like a heck of a nice deal for someone not afraid to dig into the motor a little. Hope it just needs something relatively minor. Good luck.

RodKnock 06-26-2013 11:55 AM

Congrats Bill. I'm envious of your garage.

It's blowing nice blue smoke out the side pipes, I'm going to yank the push in valve cover breather and install a PCV set up just to see what happens....After that will come the compression test and leak down test.......Only other item of interest is a faint clunk in the right rear. Will have to check that out as soon as I can borrow a lift.

Why, because it looks clean from that angle

Believe me, from the other angle it is not.

Looks good Bill.

You really should clean that garage up a little. So messy, I don't know how you can work in there!
Nice looking project!

Well stated.

That being said, and given the car's current propensity to belch blue smoke, would it be wiser to aim those sidepipes toward the garage doors instead?

CHANMADD 06-27-2013 09:06 AM

Good luck on the PCv....after looking at the pic , I thought that might be the problem.......a cheap fix if you're lucky...:)

ZOERA-SC7XX 06-27-2013 09:31 AM

May also be an intake gasket leaking some oil into a chamber...

JBCOBRA 06-27-2013 10:38 AM

It would be cool if you got lucky with something simple. Any smoke out the breather?

yes, on the easy side I am (was) thinking valve seals.

On the not so easy side I am thinking a ring job.

Had it out and put 50 miles on it, while it puffed blue smoke out the passenger sidepipe, the drivers sidepipe was clean as could be.

Forgot to check if the valve covers were baffled, so the K&N push in filters could be losing oil through splash action (it does show on the rear of the valve cover on the passenger side, drivers side shows a little, but not as much).

Only other thought I had was that the engine builder did not put any oil restrictors in the heads......

We'll find out in a few weeks when I have time to dive into it..

Does it puff all the time or more on deceleration or acceleration?
If the smoke is just coming out one side, I think Zoera is correct with the intake gasket. I had the same thing this spring. On heavy deceleration I would get smoke out the passenger side. Intake gasket was not installed correctly.

So, is the old sold?

Left yesterday (I did not make any of the arrangements was not crazy about what they sent to pick the car up and take to Port Newark), on it's way to a slow boat to Germany.

Put the PCV in.............please...............!!!!!!!

fdjake 06-30-2013 12:58 PM

I don't think a PCV is going to fix this one.

It's won't, I already knew this, but it does allow the engine to vent/burn what was originally being blown out the K&N filters that were epoxied in  to the valve covers. Far less usage in my first 322 miles, have used less than 1 quart of oil, so it helped a little bit, it also showed that it is only the passenger side that is blowing oil. In a few weeks when I have time to tear in to the motor with my engine guy, we'll get it all figured out, hopefully in time for the LVSAAC fall show in Hershey, PA
