I hate extra parts, any guesses to what this is???

I presently have the interior out of the car to R&R the rear pinion seal. While I was at it I decided to bleed the rear brakes, inspect pads, install speed bleeders, braided line to replace the flexible brake line, rear Master and brake light sensor/sender. I found this snap ring on the cockpit floor yesterday. I am not sure if it is from one of the jobs that I did or has been there for ten years from the builder of the car.
I hate old age and senility! It is the size of a dime...any guesses? Dave |
That looks like a circlip from a Lucas windshield wiper motor. It holds the main drive gear in position. Do your wipers work (and park) Ok? If this clip is missing, the gear will often not depress the park switch and the motor will stop anywhere.

Make sure its not off the brake/clutch/accelerator pedals or pushrods etc, you don't want to find that out the hard way.

1 C clip on wiper motor as rally has said 2 C clip on one of the universal joint to hold into yoke or outshafts 3 C clip is spare parts from previous repair and got left in car and fell under rug Check all the drive shafts for retainer "C' clips. You know to mark all the parts for changing a seal on the rearend? Later Rick Match the clip to see if it's the same size as the "u" joint retainers |
Take a quick look at the underside of the ferrules in the doors for the side curtains. They are retained by a snap ring about that size. Quick easy check to see if one is missing the snap ring.

It's an external clip, so I vote for the side-curtain ferrule.

I have something similar on my steering shaft. There is a clip on either side of the top bearing, to keep the shaft in place.

I'll go with Bob on this one, that it's a ferrule clip. I've got a couple that just won't stay on and there is always that " oh ****" moment when I see it just before the vacuum sucks it up.

Oh, You mean the clip! not the match (cigarette lighter). I thought the clip was the pull-tab on your beer can.... It's an outside E-Clip retainer. Take a look for a shaft which has a groove on the end....

Thank you all for the great suggestions and laughs. i will check all the suggested places and post back to this thread. I think it is to dainty to have anything to do with the u joints. I am liking that side curtain ferrule guess!
Yes, Rick I marked everything before doing the pinion seal job. OK, just check all the locations, and the winner is .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................ side curtain ferrule! It is the same as the side curtain ferrules. Mine are all there, so the old owner must have dropped this one. I will save it as a spare. One of the snap rings had clear RTV all over it. My guess is that it fell off and he could not find it, so he replaced it and RTVed it at the same time. I like that idea and think I will do the same to the remaining 5 snap rings. I agree with others on the Ferrule clip. That is the only place I have seen thos clips used.

I was convinced that my Cobra was built using those little mechanical robotic parts that could mate and have baby bolts and nuts. There were always pieces and parts under the car and in most cases, I could never find where they came from. I did drop a small wrench one time that magically appeared on the garage floor but I could never figure out where it fell.

Finding small random parts and bolts on your driveway or garage floor can really bring on anxiety. Recently a guy on Corvette Forms found a shoulder bolt in his driveway after parking his midyear Corvette and was frantic to find out where it fell from so he posted a picture. Someone actually identified it as a metric bolt securing a Honda's lawnmower's blade. Sure enough, he looked and his was missing one. :LOL:

Yes...I dropped and extension cord adapter into the engine bay of my Toyota two nights ago while charging the battery. Could not find it and never hit the ground. You know the next owner will have it in his driveway 5 years from now wondering where it came from and yelling at his kids to not touch his tools.

Did you check the ferrules for the top bow??? I just happen to be missing one of these clips on the passenger side top ferrule and on the hunt for another one. (:
