		Thanks COBRAMAN.  I found the series of youtube videos you posted shortly after creating this thread which cleared up my confusion, but I hadn't seen the other source, which is very helpful. 
 
I was confused when I opened the caliper because I have the old style pawl and it wasn't seated where it should be.  As a result, I couldn't picture how the mechanism worked, but the video made it apparent. 
 
I cleaned up the teeth on the ratchet gear with a file but there is still some wear where the pawl engages them.  I'd like to replace the gear just so that a $10 part doesn't cause a failure on a part that requires so much time to access.
