Which oil filter???
Bob,
I must be blind, I can't find in the instructions which oil filter to run. What do you recommend? Thanks, Steve D***ey #606 |
The standard oil filter for an FE. Fram HP1 (I think...) or equivalent.

In the archives ...
There is a really long and informative thread on oil and filters...consensus (for me at least) was that the Mobil 1 filter or the K & N filter were the best... and synthetic oil after break in, like Mobil 1 or Royal purple multi vis "street" oil. (not the racing version for the street)
Beware Fram filters...last I heard they restrict oil flow at startup! |
I'd also highly recommend the Ford Motorsports filter. They are intended for racing and high performance and have a thick shell for high pressure. A little spendy, but from my own usage, well worth it. Hold one of them in one hand and another brand in the other. You'll feel a real difference in weight. A good Ford parts guy will have a cut-away so you can compare the insides with others.

Bob,
Thanks for the very quick reply, and on a Saturday yet. Snake and BB, What are the numbers on those filters? I recall the thread on filters, it's not so much the brand as the size I needed to know. The adapter is already in the car and I didn't want to be buying several sizes to see what fits. Thanks Gang, Steve |
Hey Steve:
Use a Mobil1, Motorcraft or AC. Do not use a Fram! Search Yahoo under "oil filter study". Bob |
Steve, I don't know the parts numbers for the 427 SO
Mine is a 514 SVO (385/460 series)
I bought my K & N filters from a local chain...I bet there's one near you that can order them and get you the right parts #'s A small bonus is that the K & N is black and matches my block, and it has a socket/ratchet type removal option and a hole for a safety wire, for racing. |
Good thing about Ford Big Blocks. They all take the same filter. Steve, if you're doing a 427 with external oil cooler and have the remote adapter, any full length oil filter will fit. Lots of room under it and there's room for an oil filter "strap wrench" to tighten and remove it.
It's fun to research things but, unless you're going into serious racing, there's absolutely no need for all the "bells and whistles" the racers use. A high quality filter like the "regular variety" K&N, Mobile-1 or Ford Motor Sports will be more than sufficient. |
Bob Putnam, I believe you meant the Motorcraft FL-1A.
That's the best filter I've found for an FE also and the one I'd recommend. As BnB said, don't use Synthetic oil until after your engine is broken in or it will never break in. I think the best break-in oil is Havoline Racing 15-50. Change the Havoline oil at 500 miles, 1000 and at 2000. When you have 4000 miles on it then you can change to Mobil 1 if you prefer it. I waited until I saw a significant drop in my oil consumption before I changed to synthetic, then I new the rings had set. I have chrome rings which take a little longer to set. |
I use the NAPA part # 1624, It is a high-pressure transmission filter that has the same dimensions, gasket surface, etc. as the #1's for FE's.

Jerry,
You're right. We use the Motorcraft filter ourselves, but from home my memory just fades, fades, fades away. :MECOOL: |
Jerry,
When I bought my car, it had 1600 miles on it and it was already running on Mobil 1 synthetic. I now have 4,000 miles on it and I changed it once myself at 2,500 (staying with Mobil 1). Is this a problem? My oil pressure drops from around 60 PSI cold to around 40-50 PSI (depending on RPM) when it gets warmed up. Would you recommend I change it to a non-synthetic? I hate being stupid. |
Oils and filter
Hi
My last Cobra with the LS7 BB Chev engine which was dry sumped ran Valvoline Racing 50w oil and as far as I am concerned it wasn't suitable for my application even on a cold day it went from 70psi down to 35psi, so then I tried Valvoline synracing 15w 40 and not that impressed either! Then I thought well I have always used Castrol RS 10W 60 in my previous cars and hey presto 70psi down to 60psi even with the oil temp up to 26OF when I left my oil cooller covered over. Castrol is it for me but I reckon that Mobil 1 would be hard to beat, as i have heard very good reports on it. My tests with oils are basically how an oil reacts to temperature in one or two cars, so I am not qualified in this field. Regarding oil filters my last two cars had diagnostic filters like the Oberg with it washable gauzes, but I would say any Ford Motorsport filters would be okay in fact most filters would do the job unless you have very high oil pressure. Regarding running vehicles in especially V8 engines use a good quality running in oil or if your engine has high compression use 20/50 weight oil, but I don't think its that critical I have used Mobil 15/40 to run engines in, but I would recommend to do about 3000+ miles, if its a road engine, race engines can be run in much sooner. Gettin' a little off-topic here.
Tony, Your oil pressure seems fine for a small block, as long as you maintain about 10-15 psi at hot-idle. Mobil One tends to find every possible passage to leak from, so I would keep close tabs on your oil consumption. |
Filters
For filters, I use Moroso Racing 22470:
http://www.gessford.com/cobraparts/fmisc.htm For oil, I choose to keep my oil leaks to a minimum and use Castrol 20w50. The old FE's seem quite happy with carbon based lubricants. Respectfully, Zderf :) |
I like WIX racing l filters. They have a thick can that won't balloon or burst, and a good area of pleated paper filter. I have heard that the NAPA filters are made by wix, but I don't know for sure.
|
Napa GOLD is the same as WIX premium.
|
Steve....use a Moroso 22470 Filter...

Guys,
Thanks much for all your replies. I'm getting very close to starting my car for the first time. I just got it out of the paint shop three weeks ago after waiting almost five months. I've been spending alot of time in the garage and very little time on the forum so I didn't realize so many had posted advice. George, a special thanks to you for all your help. You are first on my list of calls when that 427 roars to life!!! Thanks again Guys, Steve |
Thanks for all the part numbers guys! :) Maybe I'll even put 'em in the manual.
    |
