webers or 4 barrel carb for 289 FIA

While Chassis 2112 makes its way towards the painters I am getting my motor ready.

I am currently building a 289 for my ERA FIA. I was hoping to get some comparison info from some of you who have built with either a 4 barrel carb or webers than changed the setup to the other.

My question is; which gets you more bang for the buck? I am leaning towards the webers, however the initial outlay of cash for the weber setup has me wondering if it is worth it.

The small block in question was pulled from my 67 mustang, it is being bored over .030", 10.5:1 compression, AFR 165cc heads, and comp cams 281HR grind cam shaft.

(the mustang got a 302, with a mild cam and edelbrock heads)

Webers are the way to go, just happen to have the setup you need for your small block, brand new, complete, polished and chromed:

If you are willing to spend the dough it is totally worth it. I budgeted for a carburetor, setup & built it that way. I got the carb, a 600 holley Double Pumper, set & drove it around a bit then ended up with some extra cash in hand & decided to throw webers on. I have the webers tuned in about 99% now & they pull noticably harder. I can get her rolling in 2nd, nail it & the tires break loose. Wouldn't do that with a carb on my slightly built 289. If you have any questions you can email me & I will be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. These are my two setups

Bang for the buck? A 4 barrell.

Weber vs 4BBL

I started with a 4BBL and went to webers (for about $3500.) and never looked back. They run great and look great. See my photos for a "before and after" for ERA 2039.

ack fia; where did you buy the weber set up?

ENTDOC 07-07-2006 07:43 PM

Pat is correct. If bang for the buck is what you are after, then the Holley is the way to go. For 3500 bucks you could have a killer set of ported aluminum heads and a stroker kit for your engine;there would be no comparison in performance for the buck. However, the look of the webers cannot be duplicated and I do love it. So it really is not a performance question,it is a cosmetic question.

I have to put in my 2 cents here.

A single 4 bbl will be the best bang for the buck indeed. Although I'd never use an Offenhauser 360 it’s just not a good manifold for much of anything over 5000 RPM. If you want get an Edelbrock F4B for about $100.00 and it's the exact same manifold as the early dual plane hi-rise cobra intake. That and a tuned 750 cfm with vacuum secondary with an adjustable vacuum port will get you more then you ever realized. Provided you have healthy cam and heads that breath.

This set up will pull more for less any day. Don’t get me wrong. No one, I mean no one likes the webers more than me. It’s just tuning them can be a bit of a pain in the rear. Nothing looks better though.

Upening the hood & listening to them breath is what it's all about:D

For those who may need a tunning video on 48 IDA down drafts. I still have some left. Go to GT40 forum and read the Reviews. Goes over breakdown rebuild instalation and balancing step by step.

Bang for the buck is a properly sized and tuned 4 barrell setup. With that said, I would still love to have a set of Webers!

priobe 07-18-2006 12:06 PM

Oliver,

Can you give me that link so I could order the video?

priobe 07-18-2006 12:47 PM

I would like to order the video but I do not see where to place my order?
