Has anyone here successfully turbocharged a FE in these cars and if so what type of body modifications were needed????

Try this link or search for twin paxton threads.

Why Twinturbos, its tight inuf with one :)
Anyone else building turbocharged Cobra? I am not finish with the car yet. I am going to repaint the car. And i have things left to do with the turbocharging project. Here is some pics from the building. http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9486/motorwu6.jpg http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/9...torrum2bb2.jpg http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/4...torumm3ds3.jpg By at 2007-04-22 http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/183...onteradfe3.jpg http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/816/scoopbr6.jpg http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/9...tfilterng2.jpg |
pretty sick design, keep us posted on the progress
|
Yes, its very sick :D But its fun.
Sure, you will get updates. I have search for other turbocharged Cobras. But it seems like there is not so many? |
Sorta...
Does a belt-driven turbo count? :)
http://www.racesystems.com/cobra/images/inlet.jpg http://www.racesystems.com/cobra/images/running1.jpg You're looking at a 435" big block build with ported blue thunder B heads, billet/forged internals and a custom Vortech centrifugal blower setup. EFI is OEM Ford; tuned with the old Autologic system. No, it's not a turbo. I like exhaust noise. :) In response to your question about body modification, very little in my case. One of the nice parts about my centrifugal/injected design is that you'll notice it all fits under the hood, and the plumbing is kept to a minimum. By the way, that's a dominator (4500) victor intake. The elbow is a billet part of my own design. The throttle body is a 1600cfm accufab unit. If you don't like the naca duct in the nose, no issue...put a cone filter on the end of the supercharger and call it done. If you don't like the fender exit/enter discharge tube, don't use a mass-air meter (it's in my fender), use a speed density EFI system like Speedpro/FAST/Bigstuff/ETC and go directly from the blower discharge to the intake. Turn the elbow around, shorten the distributor. Then you're talking about literally zero body modification. There's no reason you couldn't copy all or part of this design on your FE without disturbing the body. Now, the exhaust routing on a turbo setup would probably pose some real challenges. I thought about doing twins on my build back when I started...and putting them outside on the ends of the side pipes with cone filters on them (all exposed). Done right, I think that could be real sinister looking...but if you don't want to modify the body, you probably don't want a couple of hairdryers hanging on your side pipes with intake tubes exposed as well. I didn't like the idea of relying on an electric pump to return the oil to the motor with the turbos mounted that low. And, the plumbing was still more complicated. Turbos are a hell of a lot more efficient than blowers though...more power to you if you want to make that happen. As for me, I can't imagine ever wanting more power than what I have...it already is capable of pro-stock style burnouts starting at freeway speeds...and I could care less about efficiency. This isn't a prius, and I'm not upset that it costs 100hp to drive this blower at the 1000hp level. Anyway, some ideas to ponder... Byron |
ERA has done at least one ERA427SC with a twin supercharge setup as done originally for two cars, one for Bill Cosby and one for Shelby.
Pictures of the ERA have been previously posted by Bob Putnam here. Jim Click here for pictures: http://www.erareplicas.com/cars/673/index.htm |

Would love to stay true to there is no substitute for Cubes but bolt on a turbo and drive a weapon, at the end of the day it is all for the pleasure of driving what ever is under the bonnet.
by the way both turbo set ups look fully sick. Barker |

No replacement for displacement
If someone says to me "Why such a small big block, there's no replacement for displacement!"
I say... "I've created an impasse with equivalent air mass!" Then they say "huh"? Then I say... "An 870 cubic inch engine consuming this air (gesturing to the sky), or a 435 cubic inch engine consuming air at twice the density, are roughly equivalent torque/power producers." Then they say "huh"? Then I say "It go real freakin fast." - got it. |
FST FOX.
I am not so very good att english. But the engine is a Chevy 355 with Manley flatop piston and Eagle 6"rods. The cam is a Roller ,Comp cam. 2000/6200rpm. The heads are forged not very special.Valves 2.02/1.94. 72cc Combustenchambers. Fourboltet block with steel crankshaft. Just whatbout what everybodyelse running. If you wanna know any more, just ask. Oh ,i forget. The turbo is a Holset Hx55. Acutully little to small. It came from a 12l truck. Sound perhaps big .But not so big on a gasolinecar. Or on a Cobra specially :) 105mm intake. 90mm exhaust. Boostside 70 or 75mm. |
Buy the way. I like your response and interest here. I think everyone who have done much work and spent much time in the garage that they are realy glad to here how sick they are. Ha,ha
In Sweden you can be glad if thay say nice but probobly they say nothing at all. / Patrik |

another hair dryer
1 Attachment(s)
Here is a small block with a draw through turbo system. The Cobray-C3 has a stock crate engine at 350 inches with just a cam change. The cam was changed because it idled too smooth and just did not sound like a true TOY. All better now and at 10 pounds of boost it does give it away that something making that whining sound is not just a noisy gear drive.  :D

Another hairdryer? No its a Turbocharger.
I dont understand what you trying to say? But i think you trying to say that you rather suck then blow? Right? Goodnight. |
Hey boastsnake
Well with your 7 post history we are just meeting and you are already kind enough to tell me I would rather suck than blow. Thank you for your help. Should I bring my hair dryer to our next encounter when ya wake up after your nap? Push #1 for English and #2 for slang
It is all good ..... for the sake of clarity it is a turbocharger, basically a TO4 from turbonetics on a Martin manifold. It was a very easy and clean set up to install because it is so straight forward. With the limited boost I was very happy with the bang for the buck. |
There is a site called www.lateral-g.net
Man, they are all into turbos .. cheby motors mainly... mega buck cars. |

DEPENDS! Ha! :) (Just in case it doesn't bridge the translation, "Depends" is a brand of american adult diapers) So you havn't driven your beast yet? I havn't driven mine much...I'm about to. I built real sturdy seat brackets and bought a real good 5pt harness. I want to make the body easy to find as a courtesy to the clean up crew! :JEKYLHYDE My biggest fear is a wheel stand. Please god, no wheel stand. |
