Engine pulled - no problem - thanks for the assistance.
Top loader also sitting on the garage floor and as I was on the phone with David Kee ordering a new output shaft seal I discovered that I have the infamous 25 spline transmission. Even though its run in this cobra for 26 years it can't go back in the car. It's too dangerous. So here are my options: 1) Upgrade the output shaft to 28 spline and replace the drive shaft with bigger yokes. 2) Buy a new top loader with 31 splines, replace the drive shaft, and clutch to match bigger input shaft. Opinions? |

I just replaced my 25 splin with a 28 spline. The local rebuilder gave me the same story that it needed to be replaced. Prior to this, I had driven around for 10+ years in my 67 mustang. (someone in its past had replaced the original top loader for this 25 spline version) The reason I pulled it was to put a 5 speed in the mustang, the rebuilt toploader, with 28 spline is going into the cobra.
I only replaced it because some guys "in the know" said I needed too. For your question #1, it cost me about 900 dollars to replace the main shaft, as well as a few gears, synchros and seals for the 28 spline. The original yoke and shaft are just paperweights now. |

It just so happens that I'll be in McKinney this weekend for my daughter's soccer tourney. This might be fortuitous. Just for kicks, what size yoke do you have? If I go with option #2 I'll swing by and pick it up if that works with you. PM me with your contact info and I'll give you a holler. Lastly, it seems some of you are dubious as to the purported weakness of the 25 spline top loader. It's my understanding that they were used briefly in the early 60's, quickly replaced by the 28 spline and never intended for high HP applications. Likewise, the 31 spline replaced the 28 spline for big block applications. I realize that my trans has not failed in all these years, however, I am concerned about a potential weak link spinning at 6000 rpm right under my elbow. I'm open to input, but concerned............. |
The early toploaders were carrying 4000 + lb. Galaxies with 352's and 390's. If you were drag racing or popping the clutch at high rpm's, they would fail regularly. In a 2500 lb. car, you might be hard pressed to break it, unless, again, you were into drag racing.

Yes, I would. I just wouldn't go drag racing.
