Update on ERA 752 w/pics

With a kick in the pants from Zoera I am providing an update to my car.

It's been a long but fun journey and it's almost done. I'm excited and let down at the same time.

John came to take it back to ERA this afternoon to put on the undercar exhaust and have Doug do his thing before I get it registered.

I still have to put the seats, tunnel, windshield and wipers on permanently when it comes back.

All I can say is I would not have been able to do it with the staff at ERA, especially Doug and all the contributors to my myriad of emails I have posted over the last 6 months. I thank you all.

I've managed to track down some rare parts such as the Sunburst wheels, leverall seat knobs, CSX 16" original steering wheel, original RER 31 rear reflectors, original decals for speedo, original oil line hoses, NOS Lucas lenses and lights all around, etc.

I'm put a lot of detail into the car down to the nut and bolt level.

I have some other things to do which I call round 2. I'd like to replace the hood with an aluminum one, find or make the correct nudge bar in front with the license plate bracket, etc.

Georgeous. Excellent attention to detail!!

Frank. The car looks great! Glad to see it's near completion, and it has that 'original' look to it. As far as the hood goes, Metalmorphus in Wallingford, CT. does an 'aluminum treatment' to the underside of the hood that makes it look like the real thing. You might want to check that out before buying a new one. Great to here from you and looking forward to you joining in some Cobra runs next season. Take care and good luck.

What an elegant machine.

Rich:

Definitely into some runs next year. As for the hood, the color is less the issue then the original hood look. From the outside it is the same but underneath it is totally different then the ERA hood. The original hood is really nothing more then a slab of aluminum with a very distinctive metal tube frame...thats the look.

Take a look at this...

Sweet machine. I love the Sunburst rims and wish I had a set for mine.

Absolutely beautiful. Execution is great.

You gotta be proud that you have an ERA Cobra, and ERA don't do aluminum.

428street 10-23-2008 03:10 PM

What do you mean they don't do aluminum??!! Sure they do...Peter's car has an aluminum hood and I believe doors as well. I spoke to Peter about an aluminum hood when I first ordered the car but I decided against it. Next year for sure. It's a nice touch because most of the time you only have your hood open and you can see the proper tubing. It's crazy, I know but that's what makes me tick...

FrankJohnson69 10-23-2008 03:56 PM

Don't worry Frank, You're not alone on mixing materials. I'd love to have an aluminum hood for mine. Maybe when the repaint comes?

ZOERA-SC7XX 10-23-2008 05:59 PM

I spoke with Peter sometime last year about aluminum components and asked him if ERA would ever consider building an aluminum ERA Cobra and his response was "NO". I realize you're trying to be as close to original as possible, and it looks it, but where do we draw the line? It is 'YOUR' car, so I guess you can put on aluminum hood, trunk, and doors, but then what? Kirkham body? Kirkham chassis? You did a great car, so don't listen to me...what do I know?

FrankJohnson69 10-24-2008 04:58 AM

ZOERA you have a point and a valid one too. But these are what we choose to make them. I will tell you this with the glass hood and the way it's formed I had to "trim" the rear portion of the bracing for my rear carb to clear. Honestly it looks like crap to me and that's why I'd go with the aluminum hood like Peter has. If a good glass one can be made that will replicate the original hood and allow for carb clearance, I'd be all over it. But I don't know of any...

If I ever sell ERA #208 it would be to get a street versionERA just like #752 !! That car is awesome !!! Conratulations !!

ZOERA-SC7XX 10-24-2008 02:31 PM

No offense intended to Frank. His street Cobra is one of the most beautiful and well thought out ERA Cobras ever constructed (I live up near ERA and visit often). He accomplished what I had in mind for my black S/C. I just don't buy the aluminum hood argument. Just my opinion. That's what this forum is for.

FrankJohnson69 10-24-2008 02:38 PM

ZOERA, I apologize if I came across offended or offensive. I understand your point 100%. And agree about the forum 100% too.

Now, anyone know if it's possible to make a glass hood that doesn't have that underside rim all the way around and mimics the look of the aluminum?

Perhaps for another thread, I don't know if Frank is interested and I don't wish to hijack this.

Frank

I don't see where ERA offers aluminum hood, doors, or trunk. I thought Peter's Cobra had an aluminum finish on the hood that Ron Randall offers like the one below?

ZOERA-SC7XX 10-24-2008 03:06 PM

That's what I had in mind when I mentioned it.

428street 10-24-2008 04:34 PM

Gentlemen:

Everyone is entitiled to their own opinion, thats why we live in the Country we live in.

I hear you Rich...at the most I would go with an aluminum hood because it is what is open most of the time at shows, etc. That would be it for me.

I know Peter can "get" aluminum hoods for 100% certainty. ERA does not make them but has a source for them.

We are all, as Peter's say's, "mental" in our own way. Some more then others, some less.

So...If I ever did upgrade I'd probably go with a Kirkham but that is a pipe dream now and I really like my ERA.

Frank, hijack away...

TButtrick 10-25-2008 03:43 AM

Very nice car Frank. I just got to see Rich's car last weekend. SWEET! Look forward to driving with you and Rich next season. BTW, I have friend here in town who bought a silver street ERA a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, he never drives it.

428street 10-25-2008 02:00 PM

oh man, I'd love to see it...you have any pics? You have any details?
