Aluminum body for your Factory 5
Is there any interest for an alloy body to fit the F5 frame. I have come across a fabrication process that may make it economically possible. What price point would peek your interest?

I would be interested in this. I have no idea what it would cost, but a complete kit with an alloy body for 40k would certainly get my attention. I think it is a great idea!

i agree 6- 7K...then owners could probably sell their current bodys for $2K ish and offset the cost

I'm thinking $10,000-$12,000 sounds about right. We have been looking at hood, doors, and decklid for a "hybrid" ERA car in the $4,000-$4,500 range. Will actually be buying a new Factory Five base kit in the near future to build for a friend. The body shape looks about right and a round tube frame has a lot of of potential.

They tried that a few years back. Turned out to not be feasable for some reason or another.

Cobra Restorers used to put out some hybrid ERAs when they had a good aluminum guy on staff. Been some time ago. We're doing a hood for mine as we speak. Not difficult. Just a few small issues to overcome. The ERA hood latches won't work. You have to get originals with a round escutcheon. That's about it. We also have some original ferrules for the doors but the ERAs are so close you can't tell the difference.

I would do another one, if I could get an aluminum body. Either peaks my interest, however, like Bill, I would prefer the 289FIA body.

$10 to $12K...would put you with in reach of a superformance, and BDR roller..I think that might be pricing yourself on the high end...if you where to go the route of a 289 FIA I think that would be enough of a reason to pay a premium as its not offered as much...wow a FFR IRS with FIA aluminum body...for $35K that would be nice

Would this minimize/eliminate body work and prep for paint? That alone is $7k on top of the base kit price. Thanks all. Good discussion. Paul |
Paul...it would depend on the roughness of the aluminum body...if it was polishable add 300+ hours to go that route ...or if it was paintable then plan to spend $4,000 to $8,000 on a quality paint job....

How much do you think you could just sell hood & "non-perky" aluminum decklids for?
Maybe start with those, then go on to doors and the rest of the bodywork? A hood/trunk upgrade would be very attractive to existing car owners. Of course, getting a decent fit with the existing glass bodies would be a challenge. |

I know alfonzo was offering doors, hood and trunk in alum. for the hurricane check hm 1040/45 to see them but I belive it was about 10-12k just for those bits and he was doing the fab in mexico sounds like a great idea especially in a 289 body but what will be the price point Bobby |
It is not my intent to start more 'flame wars' with regard to Alloycars (search on CC if you're curious), but it appears they're offering an aluminum body 'upgrade' "for FFR-MKIII owners.
