Roller Cam for an FE motor

With Crane out of business, does anyone else make a hydraulic roller cam for an FE Motor?

Mooch 01-11-2010 07:45 PM

I had thought Lunati Camshafts made FE hydraulic roller cams, but a check of their current website doesn't show them anymore.

Keith Craft advertises his FE engines with Hydra Rollers from Comp Cams........

Gunner 01-11-2010 08:23 PM

Comp Cams CL33-1617-9 and others. I'd forgotten FE rollers use the link bars between lifter pairs.

4pipes 01-11-2010 08:34 PM

Comp cams makes three different grinds.

RodKnock 01-11-2010 08:42 PM

I have a Crower.

Ronbo 01-11-2010 08:57 PM

Crane is back under new ownership...

I get hydraulic rollers ground for my by Comp. Currently have about 20 grinds available. The cores are in short supply right now...

PANAVIA 01-12-2010 02:11 AM

I have a Comp cams roller in one of my 428 engines, it is a 10% hotter than the C8AX 428CJ grind.

What size, rpm range and HP and Torque are you looking for?

Danr55 Dan If you have most the specs on your motor, Keith Craft is the one with the most custom made camshafts. He own the patterns for 25-30 custom grinds. He has small ones in the .530" up to 650" lift, Alot depends on what you are looking for. 110-114LSA on th cam profile. The wider the LSA the less nasty the idle and drivibility manners. I have a 482 motor with the old crane 587-607" hydro roller and fine this is the max you can go without getting higher pressure valve springs for over 6,000 rpms. I run mine to 6,200 max rpms. Big wide power band from 2,000 - 5,800 rpms. You will need new pushrods and get the correct length. Hydros are nice. Rick L.

thanks guys.. Looks like Crane is back but only for motorcycle applications. They say that valve train is coming soon. I can't find anything in Comps catalogue that is described as Hydraulic roller. I'll Call and check.

Dan, engine builders such as Keith Craft, Tom Lucas (FE Specialities), Barry R, George Gessford, Roush, etc. all have proprietary cam grinds that the cam companies (Comp Cams, Crower, Isky, Crane, etc.) will not sell you directly. In fact, they probably won't even quote you the specs of these proprietary cam grinds.

Talk to one of your favorite engine builder.

Anthony 01-12-2010 03:54 PM

I'd just call comp cams, and get one of their recommended cams. Buy it from them, or your engine builder.

PANAVIA 01-14-2010 10:28 AM

The FE roller is a special order only. -- call in --and they will make you one.

Takes about 2 weeks

Steve

Danr55 01-14-2010 02:25 PM

THanks guys. I think I have my answer. I can get anyone to grind one for me if I have enough $$ for the cam and the lifters. Same answer everywhere. About $1000.

RICK LAKE 01-14-2010 02:39 PM

you need to shop harder

Danr55 Dan either Brent bylkins or Barry R where having a camshaft deal on the FE forum about 2 weeks ago. Cam shafts are about $250-300.00. Depending what roller lifters you go with check e-bay for hydro rollers for price. Check Jegs and summit also for prices. Also put WTB new hydro roller lifters on FE forum, see if you get any bites. What are the specs on your cam?? Did you talk to Keith Craft?? He has some real nice custom street roller camshafts.%/ Rick L.

lovehamr 01-14-2010 03:20 PM

Dan, $1k is about it with 3/4 of that being the lifters. That's about what I paid at least.

Steve

Barry_R 01-15-2010 04:57 AM

$1K would be a little high....

Danr55 01-15-2010 05:52 AM

Barry R, Can you suggest something better? I'm open to suggestions.

RICK LAKE 01-15-2010 10:49 AM

Don't forget the pushrods

Danr55 The total cost will be $1k with pushrods. Smith brothers sell and ships them in about 24 hours. MAKE SURE you have the correct ends on them and length. Some lifters are 5/16" ball, others are 3/8" ball for the lifter end. 98% of the rockers are 3/8" cup. There is a guy, Matt sell the bigger crane hydro roller on the FE forum in classifieds on page 2 or 3. Crane roller new good deal. Some thing to check out. Rick L.
