Sidewinder intake VS modern, Edel, Pond, BT ?

Is their any power differences between a bone stock original Sidewinder, Edelbrock, Blue Thunder and Pond intake ?

What is the power potential differences with the same,... ...porting & polishing technique's ?

RodKnock 08-02-2010 09:31 PM

Kevin, you should perform a search of Jay Brown over at the FE Forum. He has done a couple (or more) intake comparisons with almost every conceivable intake known to mankind. I'll try to find a link for you, if I get the time. :)

Kev, with the cubic inches you want to run coupled with a solid roller you need to stay away from dual plane intakes, especially the sidewinder. The Victor that you were talking about earlier is your best bet for feeding that beast. You don't want to mis-match components.

Clois Harlan 08-03-2010 04:37 AM

Kevin,

I ran a Sidewinder for several years until an unnamed person talked me into trading my Sidewinder for a new Blue Thunder Medium Riser. Huge loss of power and performance. Go with the Sidewinder if you have the opportunity.

FUNFER2 08-03-2010 09:02 AM

Dave- I only have one photo of the side winder and did not notice it's a dual plane. :JEKYLHYDE

Clois- what were the differences ?

There's a side winder on ebay right now. I do have a new Victor Jr. that is sponsored but, I have not done much reading about the side winder so I'm curious about it.

FWB 08-03-2010 09:27 AM

I ran a Shelby Sidewinder, I think it's a vintage intake, and a Da Vinci 950 cfm Holley on my car for about a year and half. It ran smoothly and had tons of power. Went to Webers for the throttle response and eye appeal, and don't regret it. Webers aren't for everyone and the Shelby Sidewinder set up is really good in my opinion for the big block FE's.

I have the whole assembly, including linkage and Kirkham turkey pan if anyone wants it. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Then again Jay wasn't testing these with a 527" monster with BT CNC'd heads and a stout mechanical roller. Basically, all this info is totally worthless for Kev's engine. It's apples 'n oranges...

Clois Harlan 08-03-2010 10:17 AM

My experience is that the Sidewinder out performs all other stock intakes at the low end and especially for top end. I have ran a 2 x 4 set up, Edelbrock MR, and Blue Thunder MR. With the Sidewinder my engine pulled all the way through the power band like a freight train. Massive torque and in your face performance. I sold my sidewinder for $600.

This looks exactly like my old one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...item43a0b308aa

except I closed the oil fill extension.

Clois

FUNFER2 08-03-2010 02:41 PM

That's correct Dave. Type & amount of porting and match up to the heads can be different from any builder.

FWB- I'll look over the link tonight. Thank you.

Clois- that's the one I mentioned for sale. There's 6 bidders and I'm sure it will go way past $600 What do they usually go for ?

elmariachi 08-03-2010 02:59 PM

Kevin, which carb are you planning to run and are you going to use this on the 428 in your signature?

the short answer is no....

why is it in spite of the testing done by jay which was very extensive on a dyno still believe the voodoo told by others sitting in their armchairs who have never used but two intakes in their lives with questionable carbs and builds?

i don't know the answer....but i do know jays results are correct and the numbers don't lie.
on the same note, lucas electrics........they sucked in the 60's they suck now, why would you incorporate them into a new build when there are far better choices?

same unknown answer.....

FWB 08-03-2010 03:23 PM

here's that monster motor the testing was done with...

- 428 + .030", stock rods, forged pistons at about 10:1 CR, CJ pan/windage tray
- C6AE heads, CJ valves and very minor port cleanup
- Crane dual pattern hydraulic cam, 272/284, 216/228 @ .050", .531"/.561"
- FPA headers, Holley 750 vacuum secondaries carb

was jay's brother's motor before it was put into the car.

gee it seems it is the same motor......wow imagine that......huh.....

FUNFER2 08-03-2010 03:34 PM

Jim- nope, the sponsored carb is by Quickfuel. We still have to decide on the cfm but, it will be around 850. Most people use way to big of a carb thinking it will make more power, and that's not true. Talking with a few engine builders, for the motor I'm building, George Anderson's guy's use a 750 on their big Shelby engines and Dennis & Keith is apx. the same thought.

I need to update signature when the motor's done.

I'll be starting a thread about this all sponsored paid, Genesis 427 side oiler. Dennis of Pop's Engines, will punch it out to 527 cid, mechanical roller cam, aluminum heads ect..... The build will be in Car craft, Kit Car Builder and one other magazine. We will be displaying it and my Cobra at the "Run & Gun" in Sept. and George Anderson's (Gessford Machine) newer road race track.

I'll try and let you know when I post the build. For now, look at this website that most of the photo's and video's will be home at. Here on CC, I'll add the links and most information.

We will be taking photo's and video of the entire build. From the block, all parts used, machining, engine & chassis dyno runs.

This is very exciting for me and I hope all others here on club cobra. I just hope that everyone will be respectful of all the parts and engine builder that I've chosen. There are many top quality parts, machining techniques and engine builders out there to be used. Some people here and on FORD FE, are just plain jerks and all they do is complain !

Wish me luck !

FUNFER2 08-03-2010 03:38 PM

What was the HP/TQ numbers ?
Pretty mild engine specs.

I would like to call you. Send me your number,.... if willing.

FUNFER2 08-04-2010 08:54 AM

I'm curious, did Jay do the same test with a single plane ?

I really think you missed the point, by a country mile... Jay's motor that the testing done to was a faily mild, warmed over stock stroke 428. Kevin's motor is the 527" beast. What worked well on the smallish 428 might not fair as well on the 527.. Kevin was asking about intake appications for HIS motor.

Again Kevin, the motor he tested his stuff on bears no relevance to your application. I don't think he used anything in the league your getting your motor built in for any of his intake tests.

FUNFER2 08-04-2010 06:13 PM

That's why I said, "curious" my friend. I already have the Vic Jr. for my motor.
It would be interesting to see the single's tested.
