Carburetor recommendation
Well I've pretty much had it with my fuel injection system. The Mass-Flo system is coming off. As for why, basically, I just can't get the thing to work properly.
So, for a 482 to be mostly street driven, what do you guys recommend? Hydro roller cam .633 248/252. Thanks. phil |

Go with the 1000 ultra HP. Ive been told by several people in the know that the 950 is just a massaged 750 baseplate (smaller butterflies).

I've heard that too, but the Ultra HP 950 was awesome on my old Corvette's 540ci engine. The Holley 1000 is an HP, but not an Ultra HP, if that makes a difference to anyone.

I should add that up to 500ci and 6,500 RPM, the various Holley 950's are recommended, per the sizing chart.

Call Biggs, give them them all of the relevants details on your engine and they will build to suit. I have one of their carbs on my car now and I know someone else who does as well, and both mine and theirs were almost spot on out of the box and have been absolutely trouble free. I have some pretty good contacts at Quick Fuel. They have a carb that is referenced as an "850" that is notably better than the old Holley 850 DP, which is something of a turd. The Holley has a virtually straight venturi section, while the QFT has a better waist shape for improved signal. Obviously, a smaller waist should have an impact on flow numbers - but none of them flow what is claimed anymore. That ship sailed ten years ago....
The Holley 900HP is essentially a 750 with an 850 baseplate and an improved center section - what was once a very popular modification and is a very nice running carburetor for street and track use on moderate sized engines. The 1000HP is 850 based, and the HP center section is better than the old DP, but not as good as the QFT. Of course I prefer Dominators on my bigger engines - but you rarely seem to find those on Cobra or road race style applications. |

The best carb I had on my Roush 427R single plane intake was a Pro Systems 1060 cfm mechanical secondary. Awesome for street, linear any throtle position, light switch performance, cruises at 1800 RPM in 5th(.64) 3.73 rear gear 28 inch tall tire, increased the HP by about 30 at the tires.

Be Honest
Be honest with yourself. How many times is it going to see 7,000 rpm. How many times will you load the engine to use 600 hp.
You're better served to have a slightly lower HP that is drivable that comes up a little short when you try to get to 6400 rpm than vice versa. Are you gonna' race it or try to drive it on the street. Do yourself a favor - be honest. my 2c Paul |
