How do I build a 600 HP 428cj?
How do I build a 600HP 428cj that will run on pump gas. No supercharger or NOS, please. Details would be helpful. I thoroughly appreciate any advice you can offer.

Aluminum heads with lots of porting and polishing, roller cam and willing to spin the motor 7,000 rpm. That means you need to shift at 7,500 rpm, not advisable for a cast iron crank. Also the needle bearings in roller lifters need to be checked aprox. every 3,000 to 4,000 miles for wear. Just one more thing, you probably would not be happy with the driveability of such a motor on the street.
Sorry, but thats why nobody answered your post. Jeff |
Why do you want 600 HP? The reason I ask this question is because people often think that is the HP rating of some fast car they know that often times isn't all that fast maybe runs 12's or even 11's in the quater. In all reality the car may only be making 450 HP. The reason the other reply you recieved wasn't very receptive to your idea was that many engines out their do not make that much HP. It takes an extremely wild 428 to make that much power but it can be done and anything can be driven on the street for example I have a tubbed 80 Mustang with a 427TP duel 800 holly carbs 14:1 pistons and a 719 lift cam with a 583 rear end gear and I have driven this car on the street in my crazier days but it is not what you would call a street car although I have driven it to work. The big question is is how fast do you want to go and how streetable do you want the car to be? Stock eliminator 428 Mustangs dyno at 500HP and run 10's in the quarter and this type of an engine could be made streetable and retain the power without the restriction of class rules. If I can help you with your problem please let me know with a response.

High compression ratio. High enough to need race fuel to run it.
Or, supercharge it. |
ZZZZZzzzz...
First, think about that 600hp 428 all day. Then, that night, take about 6 Tylenol PM capsules. By the time you hit REM, you should have that baby up to about 750 hp!:3DSMILE:
Just kidding with ya JW. It could be done, but you'd better have deep pockets. Better listen to Doc & Jeff. Dave:cool: |
think on the lines of tq instead of hp,remember basis physics, torque moves mass, mass being your ride.just stroke the 428 and pull huge tq numbers and be happy with the 450 to 500hp number, weve dynoed many 428 strokers that pulled 400 ft lb at rpms as low as 2000,wow,power just off idle.now thats real fun.

and what you want for the street.

There have been 4 articles in car mags. just done
jworrall J like others, I got to ask the question, WHY?? Have you every driven a 600HP high performance car? Gone to a driver school? Most Cobras have NO power brakes, power steering, ABS, tracion control, ( unless you use your foot) short wheel base. If you are going to build a motor for your car, build 600ft of torque. This will give you 550 HP and still be streetable. Gessford Machine, Keithcraft, Barry R. and about 1/2 a dozen PRO motor builders can make you a nice engine for your car with enought power to scare the carp out of you.:rolleyes::) Right now a have 514 HP and 535ft of torque in a 482 motor in my car. I have had to learn to drive the car different than wheen it had 368HP and 448ft of torque. Look up the old threads from Ernie (Excaliber) and his 600 HP motors and the pain in the butt it was. Look at what he's got now. Unless you plan to drive at 140mph all the time, build a torque motor. Torque moves the car not HORSEPOWER. %/ If you look in Hot Rodding, and a couple of mags from the last year, Jay B, Barry R, Joe Sherman have all build FE motor. I think Barry Has his Engine masters motor for sale or part of it. There is another company that sells motors cheaper that the rest on this forum. I don't have any info on being good or bad, but I always go with the if it's cheaper than anyone elses, this makes me worry about cutting corners.%/ Rick L.

rick understands the tq vs hp,he owns one.we have built many 600hp engines that the owner was either scared to drive it or they got hurt after wrecking the car,all because some article read you can build this monster 600hp Fe,if your racing, thats fine but for the street, tame the beast and you will be very happy with the drivability and power you have.just a pennies worth of my 33 plus years as an engine builder and yes predominately ford engines as well as a life time of drag racing experience.build-em and have fun.

JWORRALL, I just built a 428 FE and I listen to the guys that build them for a living and I could not be happier . It drives great and I have had it in five states this summer and it is very reliable. And yes it will scare the crap out of you . I used Kieth Craft stage II heads , Diamound Piston , eagle rods , erson rockers. I would check out some of the Cobras like I did that have alot of HP and you will find they are in low gears in town , they are hard to idle in traffic and need alot of attention and they BREAK things.

Did they have Edelbrock heads and Erson rockers in 2001???

600 is okay
Considering that there are TT Terminators on the street with 750 RWHP, Z06's with long tubes and cams making 550 at the rears, Vipers with blowers, and any number of street rods with over 500 at the hides, I don't think a request of 600hp is out of line. If it gets scary put a block of wood under the "Wow Pedal". :3DSMILE:
Stage II heads as stated above, 10.5:1 compression, .600 plus lift cam should get you on your way. If you have never built an FE before, consider talking to someone like Keith Craft. Forged crank is a good idea. Here is 667 lb-ft in action http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...FE11-06-08.jpg E |
I can do that. But I woud take a somewhat different approach. I like horsepower. But the 428 at 600 is getting to the level where other things come into pay. At 600 you are right at the design limts of the block. You can add cross bolts and such - but the cost then approaches that of a 427.
I would start off with a Genesis iron block. I'd hang a Scat 4.25 stroker kit in it, a set of ightly tweaked Blue Thunder heads and a largish hydraulic roller. Your 600 comes pretty easy this way, the cost is not too far out of line, the thing drives well and the 427 adds enough to any future resale to offset any cost difference. |
The OP came on here for the 1st time in early September and made 2 posts, that's it.. I don't think he's listening anymore.
I followed the same school of thought that Barry said.. Me thinks another 100 HP would be nice though.. 700hp. Ya can't have too much horse power, at least IMO.. Dave |

It's not only early September, it is 2001 guys. That is say seven years ago. Who resurrected this bag of bones?

That motor sounded good. I heard Keith's voice and then it sounded like Gomer Pyle walked in while you were taping....."WELL GOLL-LEE" |
It shouldn't be that hard to get 600hp out of a naturally aspirated 428FE.
Here's one that I built that made almost 540hp after tuning. This was with 428ci, out of the box Edelbrock heads, a roller camshaft, and a Tunnel Wedge intake. It was also using some Superformance Cobra headers, which were far from a good set of dyno headers. As Barry R stated, when you approach 600hp, block strength is a concern. This one had cross-bolted billet main caps installed. http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...500rpmPull.jpg I'm more of a SBF man myself though. This little Windsor made 586hp at only 5900 rpm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFEE-FBsbWU |
Brent, Nice numbers for a small block!

Either is a great choice!

Love the sound of the 445! I really loved the sound of my old 418 through the SS headers. It almost sounded like it was running on alcohol. Love the SMF's!, Looking forward to my BBF! Thanks B! E |
