Way back in the 60s the mechanic at the local Ford dealership told me is stood for Ford/Edsel, who knows. I do know, however, it does not stand for "Iron" since that symbol is "Fe" not "FE". And yes I am a chemist.

BTW, who designed the grille on the Edsel anyway?

All this history and second guessing is entertaining. But I still stand by a post I made a couple years ago ( and give credit to whoever deciphered it originally)

FE = F***ing Expensive

and those of us that own one or more are proud to have spent the $$$

:LOL::LOL::LOL: If that's the case, I have a 351 FE in mine, my neighbor has a 4.6 FE in his new Mustang and the first Cobras had that famous 260 FE that was replaced by the 289 FE.:rolleyes:

I agree with Ford Edsel...BUT F---ing Expensive sounds pretty accurate to me...Mine was.
