FE = Iron???
Just another dumb question, almost hate to seem so ignorant (again!)
Does the FE in FE series engine stand for Iron (as in the periodic table), or was it just a Ford engine family designation? :JEKYLHYDE Regards, Keith |
It stands for.....
Ford / Edsel (and no, that is not a joke.)
|
years ago it was rumored that FE stood for Ford/Edsel. By the way for those of you who dont know, Edsel was Henry Ford's son. FE stands for "Ford Engine" Take it to your grave.

Go
I have to go with Ford Edsel, Because it was first put in the Edsel and replaced the Y-block.Mike:D

Last time this topic came up someone else(sorry I don't recall who) said FE stood for F***ing Expensive. The deeper I get in my build the more I believe it's true. Steve

How 'bout this...
(...poached from the FE Forum)
 "..according to the book, "Ford 1903-1984" by David L. Lewis, Mike McCarville, and Lorin Sorensen, on page 172 "The Fe was devised principally by Robert Stevenson, who was named chief engineer at Ford Engine & Foundry (i.e. FE) where the FE was cast in 1957." |
Thank you computer works, I rest.
|
although i agree with jbaird,it has been rumored that it could have stood for ford engineering, that kind of goes along with the fact that robert stevenson was the chief engineer at that time.

"Ford Engine" makes no sence. How would that help ID a series?? There all Ford engines.. I-4, I-6, y-block, windsor, clevland, 385. there all Ford engines, and all engineered by Ford... again from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine "The Ford FE engine was a Ford V8 engine used in vehicles sold in the North American market between 1958 and 1976. A related engine, the Ford FT engine, was used in medium and heavy trucks from 1964 through 1978. The FE filled the need for a medium-displacement engine created by the discontinuation of the Lincoln Y-block V8 engine. The FE joined Ford's other V8s which included a small Y-block and the big block MEL engines. "FE" is an acronym for 'Ford-Edsel'. The later versions used in trucks were known as "FT", an acronym for 'Ford-Truck'. Another engine family, the MEL, stood for "Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln". |
convincor; remember, Wikipedia is just a collection of crap that someone decided to call fact. I occasionally use it as a jump off point to find more info but nothing more. I definately would never cite it as a reference. That's like saying "Joe down the street said..bla bla.... so it has to be true!", it just doesn't make sense.

Engine FE |
Will this ever end??
It stands for Ford Edsel. Ford Engine makes no sense. Ford Engineering makes no sense. FE= iron makes no sense. None of those give any distinction to one engine family over the other. The FE was introduced in the Ford Edsel. It stands for Ford Edsel. |

Wiki is not what's in question here. It's the meaning of FE. Has there been any other source reliable or not to make you think it's not true besides what you heard?
Here's more. Reliable or not it's still Ford/edsel http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Ford-FE-engine. another http://www.kitcarusa.com/kb.php?aid=15 another http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/...sue04-a2-1.php and another http://books.google.com/books?id=0ga...sult#PPA108,M1 |
Fe
Read a story on this website somewhere that told of a young engineer that took his work home as that was allowed then. He had just gotten engaged to his long time sweetheart so he wanted to send a telegram to his parents. Since telegrams were charged buy the letter he wrote FE in the scribbles he made on some carbon copies for the new engine. He was telling his parents he was Finally Engaged so only the FE was on the design papers and they just happen to copy to the description portion.
