FYI, I just paid $96 for a case of Joe Gibbs last week. I'd be interested if we could beat that price.

Rod,

Where did you get the case of Joe Gibbs? I am looking to pick up a case soon.

Thanks,

Stentor

I always use 15/40 for diesels, zinc additive.

On the first cruise, which I ever took the car on, this happened;

to the rear main.

Fortunately I was easy on the car, and nothing else was wrong. We did a lot of checking to see where things went wrong, and also did a lot of preventitive work.

Engine builder stood behind his product, but I still had to re and re it. I'm glad 2010 is over LOL

zinc

Just make sure it's got ZINC in the oil. Older engines really need this.

Stentor,

I get the conventional 15W-50 "Hot Rod" oil. It's offered elsewhere too.

http://www.joegibbsracingoil.com/

Fred, thank you, but I'm going to stay with conventional oil until I hit around 3,000 +/- miles, which should be around the end of the decade.

Rod, this stuff? http://www.joegibbsracingoil.com/pro...otrod/hr1.html You know it says that it's fully synthetic...

Then I'm lost. It says "Conventional" (HR1 and HR2) and they also have a "Synthetic" (HR3 and HR4).

So, Conventional is Synthetic?

RodKnock 02-07-2011 01:11 PM

I think the attached MSDS sheets are wrong. They have synthetic or conventional oils.

Alright, I hunted around and found it for you. http://www.joegibbsracingoil.com/dat...15W-50MSDS.pdf They don't make it easy.

undy 02-07-2011 02:58 PM

I ordered the HR-3, fully synthetic. I paid 9.99 a quart on Amazon and bought 10 quarts. It better be some kick a$$ stuff:cool:

Like I said earlier, it's back to good ol' Mobil 1 15w/50 after this junk's used up.

ouch.....100 bucks for 10 quarts...

the Brad Penn states partial synthetic....honestly that statement seems like being partially pregnant....but i'm sure there is some technical reason why it's stated like that.

did some machining on parts for Gibbs, they don't seem to care what stuff costs, kinda like drunken sailors in my opinion, so i base the price they charge for oil on, not quality being better, but maybe on total control of the product. since there are i think only two refineries in this country doing motor oils, one being the brad penn refinery, when it comes right down to it is the joe gibbs really any different or better than the Brad Penn? who knows....opinion and preference i think rules in the end

Fred

Just buy whatever your favorite oil is regardless of the ZDDP content and add the ZDDP yourself. Then you get the best of both worlds, . . . your favorite oil, AND ZDDP.

Eastwood's ZDDP Oil Additive 4 oz.

.

Which motor oil are you using?

We cant get Joe Gibbs here in NZ, a popular oil here for racing is Schaeffers semi-synthetic.

Fuelish 04-11-2011 06:24 PM

Just ordered a case of Joe Gibbs 10w 30 conventional from Jegs at 7.99 a qt. free shipping but a small handeling charge. Must use for my new Keith Craft 408 or warrenty work is null and void.

I was not referring to an average engine, but a vintage 289 flat tappet mechanical cam engine. The kind most vulnerable to an insufficient amount of zddp. Therefore the lack of measurable wear is an indication that sufficient lubrication is present. Not fact, or proof, but definitely an indication.

Check out the Mobil 1 Racing Oils (page 2 bottom), if I'm not mistaken those 2 have the highest ZDDP content of any oils discussed so far? If so, and the ZDDP ppm count is the sum total of this debate - I would say the discussion is over (unless you decide to mix you're own).
