Default 427 or 428 crank

i need to get a new crankshaft for my 427, I have seen a lot of people using a 428 crank. I know a 428 crank has a longer stroke then a 427 but what all do you need to change in a stock 427 to use a 428 crank and is it worth it.

Pistons and rods, you can buy a rotating assembly from one of the vendors who advertise here...

If you use a 428 crank instead of the 427 crank
You can use the same rods but will have to get different pistons

I have a billet crank I'm going to change out with 428 cast crank in my Bennett car. Engine was built by Engines by Rex Sacramento ca. Engine will be taken to Rex soon and exchanged crank will be available. Crank is perfect I just want a billet crank put in when the engine is refreshed. Car has been sitting for 7 or 8 years and needs new gaskets , new belt on dry sump pump and what ever else Rex thinks needs to be done. I don't know price yet will ask Rex when its checked out. Time frame next 60 days. 428 cranks are used for more torque. I believe the engine put out 500lbs of torque with 1 four barrel.

The only reason for putting a 40 year old 428 crank in your FE is if you already happen to have a 428 crank hanging in your basement. If you don't, then you should get a new stroker crank... along with new rods, bearings, pistons rings, etc. There's a slight debate as to how much stroke is the right amount.

If I remember right the 390 uses the same crank as the 427. Same stroke and journal diameters.

Go with after market crank for optimized stroke and better permforming BB Chevy sized rods.

You would not save much or gain much by simply going to a 428 crank over a after market unit.

Most engine builders would probably tell you to go with a 4.25 stroke in a 427.

The 428 crank - original or aftermarket - only needs pistons to work. You can re-use your existing rods. But you will need to rebalance since the factory 428 was externally balanced. You'll be purchasing a crank, pistons, rings, bearings, and balancing.

For the added cost of a set of rods - newer, likely better (depending on points of view) - you can get a complete rotating assembly with a 4.125 or 4.250 stroke that has a lighter piston, and longer rods with the BBC bearing dimensions.

Only reasons to do the 428 crank deal these days is to stay within a rules mandated displacement, utlize pre-existing parts to save some cash, or to retain Ford dimensions for reasons of nostalgia or restoration integrity.
